QUALIFICATIONS: (A) Two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in the operation of a school bus; OR,
(B) One (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as an auto maintenance mechanic, plus one (1) year of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as defined in (A) above; OR,
(C) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in Automotive Technology or a closely related field, plus one (1) year of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as defined in (A) above; OR,
(D) One (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as a bus driver or truck driver for a common carrier, plus one (1) year of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as defined in (A) above; OR,
(E) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), (C) and (D) above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must meet all State and Federal pre-employment requirements of the position prior to employment including the appropriate driver’s license for the vehicle being operated. It is the jurisdiction’s responsibility for ensuring the employees possess valid licenses appropriate to the type of vehicle(s) being operated.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.) - Supervises a staff of Bus Drivers on a daily basis.
- Ensures daily bus routes are staffed.
- Trains new Bus Drivers in the operation of buses, and the rules and regulations of the District as they pertain to transportation.
- Assists with extra runs and trips.
- Completes evaluations of school bus drivers and bus attendants.
- Communicates with parents regarding student behavior on the bus.
- Pulls video and assists in investigations
- Performs tasks relating to the maintenance and repair of buses.
- Scheduling and completion of the following:
- Pre-employment and biennial medical exams.
- Submission of pre-employment and annual driver abstracts.
- Submission of fingerprints of school bus drivers and attendants for review.
- Completion of annual defensive driving observations.
- Completion of biennial road tests.
- Completion of biennial oral/written tests.
- Annual 19A affidavit of compliance submitted to DMV by July 1.
- Assists the Executive Director of Operations in scheduling all pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing for school bus drivers.
- Schedules and leads 30 Hour Course for new school bus drivers/attendants.
- Leads all required school bus safety drills and completes paperwork as needed.
- In conjunction with the Executive Director of Operations, schedules NYSED required trainings and additional sessions.
- Completes driver abstract reviews for all school district “coach-style” approved trips.
- Supervises driver trainers and schedules training of new applicants.
- Completes all DMV requirements for new district vehicles, insurance paperwork, and plates.
- Serves as a liaison between the Office of Inclusive Education and Transportation.
- Reports to bus accidents or other bus driver concerns on the road.
- Meets with drivers to discuss any student or safety concerns.
- Assists in the operations/dispatch office when needed.
- Operates two-way radio to communicate with bus drivers and/or attendants.
- Leads and provides ongoing driver training, safety meetings, and other professional development.
- Support the Executive Director of Operations as needed/cross-training.
- Substitutes as a bus driver as needed.
- At times, upon the direction of the supervisor, work hours may need to be flexed in order to drive a bus, conduct 19A requirements, training new drivers/attendants, etc.
- Assists with morning arrival and afternoon dismissal procedures.
