Position Title: Director, Transportation
Department: Central Office
Reports To: Superintendent
Summary: Responsible for the organization, administration, supervision in the area of the school district transportation system in accordance with state law and policies along with school district policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.
- Organizes and implements a pupil transportation system within the policies of the school district.
- Develops and maintains lists of children eligible for transportation.
- Develops bus routes for all bus drivers using routing software.
- Approves bus stops in as safe a location as possible.
- Approves field trips, athletic trips for transportation.
- Recruits, interviews, trains, and checks background and recommends for employment bus drivers, substitute drivers and bus aides.
- Periodically checks the driving records of all bus drivers in order to assure student safety and prepares annual BMV reports for each driver.
- Coordinates bus inspections with the State Police.
- Coordinates with bus mechanic to ensure all corporation vehicles meet DOT requirements and inspections.
- Coordinates drug testing program for drivers and maintains records for annual audits by the State Police.
- Conducts driver education program for school bus drivers.
- Maintains personnel records and reports to payroll to the payroll department.
- Keeps records for preparation of state and local reports such as inventories, pupils transported, route mileage, time records, special trip records, traffic accidents, and other required reports.
- Makes recommendations that may improve transportation services and efficiency such as rules and regulations for drivers and pupil conduct.
- Reviews bus tapes as necessary.
- Coordinates and communicates with parents and administrators when questions and concerns arise.
- Prepares transportation budget and bus replacement plans with the Superintendent.
- Supervises all transportation employees and conducts evaluations annually.
- Supervises bus mechanic and evaluates him/her annually.
- Keeps office area neat and clean.
- Assists in checking roads when necessary to determine delays and cancellations.
- Attend Directors’ meetings as necessary.
- Any other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of all transportation employees.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: High School or GED preferred. Experience in general transportation operations.
Salary: Based upon experience and qualifications.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of district.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Other Skills and Abilities: Personal computer and spreadsheet skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
