    Purpose Statement
    The Prevention Specialist, under the direction of the Student Support Services Director(s), supports and implements school-based prevention efforts, including substance abuse prevention, suicide prevention, bullying prevention, and gang involvement intervention. This role provides programs and consultation to strengthen protective factors and reduce risk factors for students, families, schools, and communities.  
    Essential Functions
    • Experience with grant writing and grant management.
    • Knowledge and understanding of behavior and prevention practices and principles.
    • Experience creating and delivering professional development and training programs to school staff and administration.
    • Experience with Crisis Response, suicide prevention, risk-assessments, substance use, and bullying prevention.
    • Chair the ASD Suicide Prevention Coalition
    • Provide training and support for school-wie suicide prevention programs in schools (Sources of Strength, Hope Squad).
    • Implement and provide training on district supported evidence based mental health (SEW) curriculum and suicide prevention programs at the elementary and secondary level.
    • Plan, organize, and coordinate prevention activities and presentations, including workshops and conferences.
    • Analyze data to determine risk trends (e.g. SHARP, Culture, Climate and Connection Survey, etc.)
    • Coordinate mental health screening events with schools and service providers. Design advertising flyers and organize screening events, student sign-up and participation information.
    • Coordinate with service providers to improve individual and family access to appropriate services and resources in the community.
    • Manage and update the district mental health and well-being website.
    • Provide training and support to school advocates.
    • Maintain an ongoing liaison with community agencies (CTC, PTA, County Health Department, etc.) and other resources to meet student needs; refer parents and students to agencies when appropriate.
     
    Experience  
    Job-related experience is required.
    Previous experience as a school-based mental health provider (counselor, psychologist) is required.
    • Valid Utah Educator or DOPL license.
    • A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree and an administrative license are preferred.
    • Professional communication skills include but are not limited to excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; confident, articulate, and professional speaking abilities; and empathic listening and persuasive speaking skills.
    • Minimum combined experience of three years working in a school and/or mental health setting.
