    The program specialist for the Career Academy for Postgraduates provides general supervision and guidance to students enrolled in the program during afternoon and evening hours in the academic and residential setting on a regularly scheduled basis. Duties include, but are not limited to:
     
    KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:
     
    • Provides instructional support and reinforcement to students that are aligned with their individualized program curriculum. This may include tutoring and/or direct instruction on novel concepts and can be either academic or life skills based.
      • Collaborates with the Transition Coordinator with delivery and implementation of existing lesson plans;
      • Develops and implements group or one-on-one lesson plans that support the Career Academy curriculum, as requested;
      • Documents student progress across various skill development and provides constructive feedback.
    • Serves as a liaison to facilitate communication between stakeholders involved in participant individualized plans, including related service providers, postsecondary institutions, employers, etc.
    • Acts as a mentor and advisor to provide guidance with regard individualized participant goals and present level(s).
    • Facilitates age-appropriate social activities for postsecondary students including participation in community events related and unrelated to disability.
    • Provides reports to the Transition Coordinator on a bi-weekly basis (or sooner, if deemed necessary) on participant’s progress, disciplinary issues, medical/health concerns or any other pertinent information related to their successful completion of the established Career Academy Program (CAP) goals.
    • At all times, encourages participant independence, autonomy and self-advocacy.
    • May be required to transport participants in a state vehicle, as assigned.
    • Attends all required staff meetings.
    • Adheres to the Employee Code of Conduct as outlined in WVSDB personnel policies.
    • Performs other duties deemed appropriate and assigned by the Superintendent and/or immediate supervisor.
     
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, social work, occupational therapy, rehabilitation counseling or a related field required.
    • Minimum of three years of work experience with individuals with hearing and/or vision loss preferred.
    • American Sign Language and/or Braille Code skills preferred.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license. 
    • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate.
     
    KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
    • Knowledge of and skill in the use of databases, internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications for effective communication and reporting.
    • Has or will acquire knowledge of and skill in the use of technology and equipment to supplement instruction for students with hearing and/or vision loss.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Ability to preserve confidential information.
    • Effectively writes professional correspondence.
     
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computer and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions.  The employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50-100 pounds. He/she shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace.  Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.

    7. The staff member demonstrates excellent communication skills and excellent presentation skills using current technologies.
    8. The staff member understands that work assignments may change or be added as priorities emerge.
     
    EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIP:
    WVSDB staff are employed upon the recommendation of the school’s superintendent to the West Virginia Board of Education and are state employees.  No representative or employee of the state is authorized to enter into any employment contract or other agreement.  Designated employees paid under WVDE guidelines are “at-will” and subject to termination by the State Superintendent of Schools at any time, with or without notice, cause or compensation. Specialists are paid under the WVDE compensation schedule and are deemed “at will” employees.
     
    The employment relationship between the WVSDB/WVBE and the employee may be terminated by either party.  Reasons for termination by the WVSDB/WVDE include, but are not limited to, immorality, incompetency, cruelty, insubordination, intemperance, willful neglect of duty, unsatisfactory performance, the conviction of a felony or a guilty plea or a plea of no contest to a felony charge, misuse of funds or property, violations of law or policies of the state board, lack of need, or a lack or loss of funding.
     
    COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:
    Based on WVDE Salary Schedule Coordinator level, 261-day annual contract.
