POSITION 25P33 TITLE: Summer Speech Therapist (Up to two dependent on enrollment)
LOCATION: Central/Countywide (Summer School Program)
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimal qualifications will include a MA degree and valid WV service certificate licensing him/her to serve as a Speech Therapist or Speech Pathologist at grade levels commensurate with an assignment of Pre-K-6
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provide a language, speech and hearing program to meet the needs of each involved student in order to develop maximum competence in communication
2. Advise the Special Education Director of program goals and objectives
3. Seek to prevent language, speech and hearing disorders through student and public education, early identification of problems and active work with children. Such work may often involve parents, educators, and health professionals
4. Conduct hearing screening
5. Provide services for children and youth who have communicative disorders:
a. Identify children with communication problems by screening, survey, or referral
b. Assess and diagnose child’s communicative needs and behaviors
c. Goal based remediation given in individual and/or group sessions
d. Periodically reassess and evaluate child’s goals and objectives
6. Provide direct intervention services to children with:
a. Language handicaps that are often the basis for academic learning disabilities
b. Disfluencies (stuttering)
c. Hearing impairments
d. Moderate-to-severe articulation defects
e. Language, speech, and hearing disorders associated with cleft palate, cerebral palsy, intellectual impairment, emotional or behavioral disturbances, visual impairment, autistic behavior, aphasia, and other conditions.
7. Provide leadership and support in his/her area of responsibility
8. Establish and implement an improvement process for his/her area of responsibility
9. Establish good public and employee relations in his/her area of responsibility
10. Maintain professional work habits
11. Maintain and upgrade his/her professional skills
12. Conduct and coordinate developmental screening with other public agencies
13. Provide notice to the public of the availability of these services
14. Facilitate the BTT referrals of children who need other services
15. Keep records of the number of children screened, process used, referrals made and concerns identified for which no assistance was available
16. Design and provide training to parents of handicapped students.
17. To the maximum extent possible, Medicaid reimbursements will be sought for screenings conducted on children who are Medicaid eligible
18. Perform other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director.
