7-12 Science Teacher - Lied Center
Starting the 2025-2026 School Year
Position Purpose
The 7-12 Science Teacher at the Lied Center plays a critical role in providing engaging, hands-on science instruction tailored to meet the diverse learning needs of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), particularly those with behavioral challenges. This position is responsible for designing and implementing differentiated lessons aligned with state standards while fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
The teacher will create a structured, supportive learning environment that promotes both academic growth and social-emotional development. Collaboration with special education staff, paraprofessionals, and related service providers is essential to ensure student success. Additionally, the teacher will support students in developing self-regulation skills, resilience, and confidence in their abilities.
This position requires flexibility, patience, and a commitment to helping students reach their full potential through innovative, student-centered instruction.
Essential Functions
Instruction & Curriculum Development
- Plan and deliver engaging, hands-on science lessons aligned with state standards and tailored to meet diverse student needs.
- Differentiate instruction to accommodate students with IEPs, ensuring accessibility and comprehension.
- Incorporate inquiry-based learning, experiments, and real-world applications to foster scientific thinking.
- Utilize a variety of teaching strategies, including direct instruction, cooperative learning, and technology integration.
Student Support & Classroom Management
- Create a structured, supportive, and trauma-informed classroom environment that promotes positive behavior and student engagement.
- Implement behavior support strategies in collaboration with special education staff and behavior interventionists.
- Teach and reinforce self-regulation, problem-solving, and executive functioning skills.
- Maintain high expectations while providing appropriate accommodations and supports for student success.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers to support student needs.
- Participate in IEP meetings, providing input on student progress, strengths, and areas for growth.
- Communicate effectively with families, staff, and administration regarding student progress and concerns.
Assessment & Data-Driven Instruction
- Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Maintain accurate records of student performance, behavior, and participation.
- Use data to inform instructional decisions and provide targeted interventions.
Professional Responsibilities
- Engage in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in science education and special education.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives, staff meetings, and professional learning communities.
- Maintain compliance with school policies, procedures, and special education laws.
- Foster a growth mindset and positive attitude in both students and colleagues.
Additional Duties
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Travel Requirements
- Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

- Understanding of trauma-informed teaching practices and behavior intervention strategies.
- Awareness of adolescent development and social-emotional learning principles.
- Experience with data collection and analysis to drive instructional decisions.

Qualifications Profile
Certification/License:
- Valid Iowa Teaching License with a 7-12 Special Education endorsement and/or 7-12 Science License or willingness to obtain a conditional license
- Must hold or be eligible for a Level 2 Behavior Disorder/Emotional Disturbance endorsement or have a willingness to obtain a conditional license
- Additional endorsements in science or willingness to obtain a conditional license
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, or a related field required.
- Valid Iowa Teaching License with a 7-12 Special Education endorsement and Level 2 Behavior Disorder/Emotional Disturbance endorsement (or ability to obtain).
- Endorsement in Science (7-12) preferred or willingness to obtain a conditional license.
- Experience working with students with behavioral challenges and/or diverse learning needs preferred.
- Prior experience in a special education setting, alternative education, or trauma-informed teaching is a plus.
- Strong background in implementing IEPs, behavior intervention strategies, and differentiated instruction.
