Description:
The school psychologist supports schools and students to promote optimal learning experiences and advance outcomes for all students through psycho-educational and behavioral assessments, the collection and analysis of data, program planning, service delivery, and consultation in the educational setting. Provides direct service to students experiencing difficulties in the traditional school setting, as well as direct service to students who struggle with significant behavioral, emotional, and/or mental health.

Job Responsibilities:

• Selects and administers assessments in alignment with federal and state regulations surrounding the validity and reliability of diagnostic instruments, nondiscriminatory testing  and adaptive testing procedures. 

• Administers and analyzes results of diagnostic instruments to assess students’ developmental, cognitive, academic, processing and social-emotional functioning.

• Prepares written evaluations for students referred for evaluation.

• Attends and facilitates meetings that may include referral of a suspicion of a disability, re-evaluation, eligibility, problem-solving, 504 and IEP.

• Consults with teachers, administrators and other school personnel to help them better understand and work with students’ individual needs.

• Assists with the development and delivery of staff development.

• Assists in the Functional Assessment Process (FBA) by collecting and analyzing data, and participating in the development of the FBA. 

• Assists teams in the development of Behavior Intervention Plans.

• Develops and implements targeted behavior strategies/interventions to support general education and special education students’ emotional needs and improve behavior and academic achievement.

• Assists students individually who are identified as requiring significant social-emotional, academic, behavioral and/or transition support.

• Provides school staff, students, families and the community with crisis intervention services as needed.

• Attends school-based, division-wide and department led professional development and meetings as needed. 

• Observes students in school and school related settings.

• Performs other duties assigned. 

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree from an approved program in school psychology, or a program deemed equivalent by the Virginia Department of Education review, consisting of 60 graduate semester hours, plus a one-year internship as prescribed by the college awarding the degree.
• Must hold or be eligible for a license issued by the Virginia Department of Education with endorsement in school psychology.

Working Conditions:
Requires significant sitting for extended periods of time. Must be able to stand, walk, bend over, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull and move; life and/or carry up to 20 lbs.
May work in a pleasant to stressful work environment. Meets mandated deadlines.

General Definition of Work:
Performs semiskilled work transporting students to and from school and events, and related work as apparent or
assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Director of Special Education and Student Services.
 
Qualification Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.  The
requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable

Essential Functions
• Transports students safely to and from home, games and field trips according to schedule times.
• Conducts safe and orderly loading and unloading of students at specified stops.
• Maintains student discipline on the bus and enforce rules governing student conduct by reporting undisciplined
• students to the proper authority.
• Maintains clean, safe surroundings, and ensures appropriate behavior.
• Performs routine operator care to include: sweeping bus interior, checking equipment and reporting problems (pre-trip
• inspection), and presenting bus for regularly scheduled maintenance.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of operating a school bus; general knowledge of the geography of the District and the location of
streets; skill in the safe operation of a school bus; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children
using patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials,
associates, students, parents and the general public.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements:
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or
hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally
requires standing, walking, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements;
vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying
detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at
normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection
involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing
general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working
near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and
exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is
generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements:
Valid commercial driver's license with school bus endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
