Special Education Behavior Teacher
Job GOAL:
To provide exceptional children with individualized educational programming which will foster the achievement of their potential academically, emotionally, physically, and socially. The Behavior Teacher helps coordinate intervention plans that address students’ concerning behaviors and provides a means to help the students become more academically successful and independent.
Performance responsibilities:
- Support student acquisition of core curriculum and content standards identified by the State of Wyoming and Washakie County School District #1.
- Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these desired outcomes to students.
- Attends and contributes to team meetings with the identified student’s teachers and parents.
- Promote research-based positive behavior interventions in which “At Risk” students thrive: behavior instruction that is specialized, direct, and provides ample practice.
- Maintains high standards of appropriate classroom behavior.
- Formulates and conducts individual educational assessment using all formal and informal data, including information from parents/guardians.
- Review behavior referrals and data reports.
- Gather student data through direct observation, screening tools, and interviews with students, staff, and parents to complete the FBA and develop a BIP.
- Conducts on-going assessment by analyzing and evaluating students’ daily work and uses this information to develop instructional strategies and to provide student progress reports.
- Attend professional development opportunities to maintain high level of skill and knowledge of current research and practices.
- Organize and schedule time commitments to meet demands of the job.
- Provide instruction to small groups of children in Social/Emotional skills.
- Assists in development of Individual Education Programs (IEPs) based on formal and informal educational assessment.
- Incorporates current knowledge of each exceptionality and best instructional practices for the exceptionality into each student’s program.
- Uses written lesson plans to help provide structure and consistency within a positive learning environment.
- Employs a variety of instructional materials, e.g., print, video, audio, manipulative, and creative, and allows for a variety of responses modes.
- Communicates and works cooperatively with administrators and regular education staff in implementing mainstreaming requirements of the students’ IEPs, e.g., resolving scheduling problems, monitoring student progress, and supporting regular education teachers.
- Accepts responsibility for increasing student success and preventing failure by motivating students, monitoring their performances, fostering successful learning experiences, and assisting development of realistic self-awareness and self-control.
- Establishes a partnership relationship with parents to ensure on-going communication and total program consistency, involving parents in their child’s instructional program to the greatest possible extent.
- Collaborates with occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech/language pathologists, and other service providers to facilitate an integrated instructional program.
- Reports to Special Education Director and/or building principal.
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality when entrusted with personal information pertaining to students or staff members.
Additional Duties
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Special Education Director, administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
- Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements
- Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
- Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, methods, etc. as well as proven methods of maximizing the educational experience of students with special needs.
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications Profile
Certification/License:
- Wyoming State Certification as a Special Education Teacher, Exceptional Generalist K-12.
- Highly Qualified as Special Education Generalist in applicable grade levels required.
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education:
- Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
