JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE:                          Principal, Elementary

CONTRACT PERIOD:                    Certified position; 205 days

REPORTS TO:                                Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent

POSITION SUMMARY: Provides leadership in developing and implementing a quality education program for all students regardless of needs or abilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

School liaison with the community.
Observes and evaluates assigned personnel.
Observes and evaluates students’ progress.
Works toward the accomplishment of Board of Education Goals and Illinois State Standards.
Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations by the school’s staff and students.
Participates in events associated with the school program and District.
Committed to professional growth and the School Improvement Plan.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leads the school’s instructional program.
Establishes and maintains an effective learning environment in the school.
Establishes and maintains an effective site-base program for staff development, technology, and school operations.
Schedules classes within established guidelines to meet student needs.
Supervises the guidance program to enhance individual student education and development.
Establishes guidelines for proper student attendance, conduct and for maintaining student discipline.
Plans, organizes, and directs implementation of all school activities.
Initiates, designs, and implements programs to meet specific needs of the school and the students.
Acts as liaison between the school and the community, interpreting activities and policies of the school and the District and encouraging community participation in school life.
Orients newly assigned staff members and assists in their development, as appropriate,
Coordinates or supervises support services such as custodial, security, extracurricular programs, financial and accounting functions, and instructional media activities.
Evaluates and counsels all staff members regarding their individual performance.
Prepares or supervised the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paper work required or appropriate to the school’s administration.
Participates in district-wide committees and activities.
Prepares and submits the school’s budgetary requests to the Business Manager and monitors expenditures of funds.
Maintains and controls the various local funds generated by student activities.
Cooperates with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation.
Cooperates with various members of the central administrative staff regarding the total school program.
Conducts staff meetings to keep members informed of policy changes, new programs, and other District developments.
Assists in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning, and evaluation of the school’s professional staff.
Keeps the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent informed of the school’s activities and problems.
Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
Knowledgeable in the area of and implementation of differentiated instruction and curriculum for all students.
Promotes building and District goals.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree or higher.
Eligible for a certificate in General Administration from the Illinois State Board of Education.
Successful school administration and supervision experience.
Successful experience as a classroom teacher.
