    Description:

    Sterling High School has a vacancy for a 12-month administrative position of Activities Director beginning June 16, 2025  A candidate applying for this position must possess strong ethics, have strong interpersonal skills, and be an innovative leader.  The candidate will work as part of an administrative team and must be able to resolve problems, communicate effectively, and prioritize actions and situations.  Sterling High School offers 23 IHSA Athletic Programs, 5 recognized IHSA Activities, and numerous other clubs and activities.  
     

     

    The SHS Activities/Athletic Director reports directly to the principal and is considered an educational leader at the school. The follow qualifications are preferred:

     
    • A minimum of 4 years of teaching experience

    • Previous administrative experience 

    • A Master’s degree or be enrolled in a Master’s Program

    • A Illinois General Administrative Certificate/Type 75 or Principal Endorsement on their Professional Education License 

     

    A requirement is the candidate must have, or be willing to complete prior to starting, the Illinois Approved Training for Teacher Evaluation; including courses in Professional Practice and Student Growth.

     

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

     
    • Develop, manage, and supervise developmentally appropriate athletic programs in cooperation with varsity coaches.

    • Work with SHS administrative team to continue to the development of innovative, strategic and responsive athletic and activities programs at Sterling High School.

    • Evaluate teachers in the area of Physical Education, Health, and Driver Education. 

    • Represent Sterling High School in all conference and state athletic associations; and attend all appropriate meetings.

    • Complete yearly support staff evaluations as directed by principal

    • Schedule all high school contests for 23 sports and 5 activities, while providing logistical support for all additional clubs and activities at Sterling High School 

    • Hire all coaches for Sterling High School in cooperation with the principal and with the varsity coaches when necessary.

    • Develop and evaluate all middle school and high school athletic coaches and all high school IHSA activity sponsors.

    • Prepare and implement the annual department budget in cooperation with Sterling High School principal.

    • Develop seasonal supervision calendars for the successful supervision of all IHSA sports and activities.

    • Oversee the distribution, collection, storage, upkeep, and replacement of all school athletic and activity uniforms and equipment.

    • Ensure that athletic fields and facilities are prepared for hosting of all events and contests.

    • Communicate actively with all stakeholders regarding expectations for each level of participation and competition.

    • Ensure timely and consistent communication from the Activities Department and each coach to Sterling High School students and parents. 

    • Oversee the development of weekly or monthly facility schedules.  

    • Coordinate all rentals of high school facilities to community or outside groups according to Board of Education policies.

    • Oversee the scheduling of all transportation for sports and activities.

    • Review, revise, and distribute department handbook in cooperation with an established coaches committee.

    • Enforce all department rules and regulations in accordance with department handbook and all board policies.

    • Coordinate with outside agency the school mandated drug testing program.

    • Work with varsity coaches to develop leadership training and appropriate school spirit wear and maintain website.

    • Order and distribute athletic apparel for coaches and staff.

    • Coordinate with athletic trainer and varsity coaches to ensure all student-athletes have turned in required paperwork and completed mandatory sport specific testing.

    • Report seasonally to the Board of Education on all IHSA related sports and activities.

    • Perform other duties as determined by the Principal.
