Minimum Requirements:  The following qualifications represent the minimum requirements necessary for an individual to perform this position effectively.        
• A valid Indiana teaching license, certificate, or other legal credentials required for level of

3. Create lessons and learning environments that are safe, respectful, and interesting, as well as multicultural, gender-fair, disability sensitive.  Selects, adapts, and individualizes materials appropriate for diverse student populations and skills.
4. Teach students the required curricula using strategies that foster thinking, reasoning, and problem solving.
5. Collaborate and communicate regularly with families in making educational decisions and uses family and community resources.
6. Assess student’s developmental, cognitive, and social needs and provides developmentally appropriate instruction to meet those needs.
7. Regularly assess student learning by using multiple forms of assessment.
8. Facilitate positive interactions between students and teacher, student and peers, and student and other adults.
9. Model learning and behavior consistent with the expectations for student.

Job Description
 
Position Title:  Academic Specialist                                          FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt
 
Responsible to: Elementary Administrative Coordinator              Supervises: No one                                         
 
Evaluated by: Building Principal                                                                                            
 
Terms of Employment:  180 days                                               Benefit Level: N/A                
                                                                                                                                            
Evaluation Period:
• Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per MCS Performance and Assessment procedures
• Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1
 
Purpose of the Position:  Provide small group instruction for students who need intervention, remediation, or enrichment for skills and concepts related to reading and math.
 
Minimum Requirements: The following qualifications represent the minimum requirements necessary for an individual to perform this position effectively.
• Valid elementary teaching license, valid reading endorsement (strongly preferred)
• Excellent communication skills both oral and written
 
Essential Functions of the Position:  The following functions have been determined by Marion Community Schools to be essential to the successful performance of this position.
• Provide small group instruction to students for the purpose of intervention and remediation or enrichment of skills and concepts related to Reading and Math.
• Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to determine interventions needed.
• Participates in the analysis of assessment data as it pertains to the school improvement plan.
• Assist teachers with administering building level assessments.
 
Secondary Functions of the Position:  The following functions, while important and necessary to the position, have been determined by Marion Community Schools to be marginal to the successful performance of this position.
• Work with building principal and teachers to establish daily schedule for groups.
• Organize assessment data for teachers.
 
• Perform other duties as assigned and as may be necessary.
 
Knowledge of:
• Policies, procedures and functions of best practices in reading instruction
 
• Applicable software and applications
 
Ability to:
• Plan, organize, and schedule priorities.
• Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems.
• Discreetly handle confidential and politically sensitive matters.
• Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Tactfully and courteously respond to requests and inquiries/complaints from the general public and staff.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.

• Classroom instructional equipment
 
Place where work is performed:
• Throughout the school property or building.
 
 
 
Physical Demands:
• Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time.
• Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
• Must be able to bend, stoop, and climb stairs.
• Must be able to hear and speak clearly.
