POSITION: 1.0 FTE Remedial Reading Specialist position
Certification Endorsement Requirements: 102, 097 or 096
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Reading Specialist supports students, teachers, instruction assistants, and administrators by providing guidance, leadership, expertise, and instruction to improve literacy achievement for all students.
The specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Facilitate team meetings to identify students in need of academic assistance, diagnose and analyze their needs, and prescribe an appropriate program of intervention.
- Administer formal and informal assessment to identify specific student skill deficits and strengths.
- Assist principal and teacher in analyzing student assessment data from district and State testing.
- Model effective instructional strategies in classrooms across all content areas.
- Provide instructional intervention for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students and support classroom teachers in designing and implementing intervention lessons for classroom intervention blocks.
- Create materials and demonstration lessons to strengthen the use of research based best practices and language arts instructional interventions in the classroom.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to determine the instructional levels of students, and appropriate instructional materials and grouping for instruction.
- Serve on the school’s SRBI team, and participate on the planning and placement team process as needed.
- Identify technology appropriate for reading/language arts instruction.
- Collaborate with the professional staff to ensure continuity between regular education programs and special areas/programs such as EL and special education.
- Oversee the work of instructional assistants to ensure that students are receiving appropriate language arts instruction and interventions.
- Perform other related responsibilities that support improving literacy achievement in the district.
- Assist in creating Language Arts budget and advise principal in finalizing budget in areas of responsibility.
- Participate in Language Arts Curriculum Committee.
- Work closely with principal or designee in the supervision of Title 1, etc., programs in accordance with the State and Federal guidelines.
- Design and implement professional learning opportunities around reading programs, interventions, and instructional strategies.
