Summary:
Performs mechanical servicing connected with the repair and general maintenance of school buses and other automotive power equipment.  Diagnoses problems and makes repairs, replaces worn parts for engines, ignition and electrical, fuel-air-exhaust, cooling, power train, steering and braking, and passenger safety systems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 
 
• Assists Mechanics in major repair and maintenance of school buses and other automotive equipment including vans, cars, tractors, trucks, power mowers, and forklifts.
• Performs servicing and tune-up work such as common brake system overhaul, engine tune-up, lubrication, fluids, and oil and filter changes.  Repairs and changes tires.
• Inspects engines, pans, seals, belts, mounts and struts for leaks and other abnormalities.  Repairs worn and damaged parts.  Checks or tests for proper tightening of connections.
• Assists with diagnoses and repair of non-starting, hard starting and misfiring engines, spark plug knock, power loss, and poor gasoline mileage with vehicles with or without distributors as part of their ignition system. 
• Services and replaces batteries, cables, terminals, alternators, pulleys, belts and wiring.
• Troubleshoots braking problems by checking for brake pad adjustment, shoe wear, oil/grease buildup on brake shoes and/or drums, slack adjuster mechanisms, leaks in system, clogged lines, etc.  Replaces brakes, master cylinders, and ABS components.
• May test-drive buses and other rolling stock after repairs and prior to returning to use.  Inspects first aid kits and fire safety equipment.
• Documents work orders, describing diagnostics, repairs made, and labor, parts, and other materials used in connection with repairs.
• Installs and repairs hardware for after-market technology devices on school buses.
• Maintains and repairs child safety systems on school buses.
• Drives all school bus types and other District vehicles to transport students as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.


Qualifications:
  
• Knowledge and Skills:
  • The position of Service Technician requires basic knowledge of the methods school bus manufacturers use for diagnostics. Requires basic knowledge of the standard practices, techniques and tools used in servicing, repairing, and maintaining school bus and automotive equipment. This includes and is not limited to engines, power transmission, vehicle handling, braking, cooling and emission control, and electrical and fuel systems.  Requires basic knowledge digital diagnostic tools.  Requires basic knowledge of the methods used in preventive maintenance for automotive equipment.  Requires basic knowledge of work hazards, safe work practices, and the procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous materials.  Requires knowledge of service documentation requirements and practices and sufficient skill to write clear reports of service activity.  Requires sufficient math skill to read, record, and compute measurements, ratios, and volumes.  Requires sufficient human relations skill to convey information to work team members. 
  Abilities:
  • Requires the ability to perform basic gasoline and diesel engine vehicle servicing and repairs, using appropriate diagnostic testing tools, techniques, and access service and repair information from manufacturers and the internet.  Requires the ability to safely and skillfully operate power and hand tools common to the trade of automotive repair.   Requires the ability to read technical manuals and schematics.  Requires the ability to work independently from customer comments, work orders, and other Mechanics’ instructions.  Requires the ability to estimate the time involved for work assignments and secure necessary tools and materials to complete assignments.   Requires the ability to perform a variety of servicing and repair activities simultaneously.  Must be able to keep accurate records and observe general safety procedures.  Must be able to obtain a class B driver’s license with Passenger Endorsement and School Bus Endorsement, along with a Special Driver Certificate for a school bus, and learn how to safely operate a bus and other District vehicles.

Education and Experience:
• High School diploma or GED.
• Two years of experience in the servicing and repair of vehicles.
• Alternatively, the position may require a post-secondary certificate/degree in an automotive technology or one or more ASE certificates.

Licenses and Certificates:
• A valid driver’s license and a Class B license with Passenger Endorsement and School Bus Endorsement, along with a Special Driver Certificate for a school bus within the probationary period.

Additional Requirement: 
• Must pass an approved pre-placement medical assessment.

Summary:
Assists Bus Drivers in supporting the safety and welfare of students while transported to and from school sites and on special trips.  Monitors activity and assists with the mobility needs of students.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 
• Monitors daily school bus activities to reinforce proper student conduct.  Moves about while the bus is in motion to attend to the needs of students, particularly those whom are physically fragile or impaired.
• Ensures safe loading and unloading of students to and from destinations, to include the use of specialized equipment for attending to students with special needs such as wheelchair lifts, tie-downs, and seat belts.
• Works as part of a team with the driver to assist with urgent and emergency bus evacuation procedures.
• Performs routine cleaning and attending to spills or body fluids that occur due to student illness or behavior.
• May fill out incident report forms, and document injuries of students or others while riding on the bus.
• Attends meetings and trainings required by the district.
• Performs other duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position.

Qualifications:
  
• Knowledge and Skills:
  • The position requires basic knowledge of the habits of school-age students including those with special needs.  Requires basic knowledge of bus safety and evacuation procedures. Requires basic knowledge of student health and first aid.  Requires knowledge of District policies about student transportation.  Requires knowledge of and skill at using a two-way radio and other communications devices, mobility and restraining devices that ensure student safety, and mechanical lifts.  Requires sufficient human relations skill to exercise a leadership presence and patience when working with others.
• Abilities:
  • Requires the ability to demonstrate the required knowledge and carry out the responsibilities of the position within a reasonable time frame.  Requires the ability to be patient and understanding with handicapped and special needs students.  Requires the ability to learn and operate safety restraining and wheelchair lift devices.  Requires the ability to work with a diverse population of students.

Summary:
Bus Drivers are qualified to drive a District-owned bus over designated routes for the purpose of transporting students to and from various school site locations and on special trips.  Bus Drivers who are offered expanded services will be assigned to custodial, grounds keeping, warehousing, and general labor to support maintenance specialists.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

Bus Driving
• Drives a regular or specially equipped school bus daily over designated and special routes in compliance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students, and, drives for special events.
• Inspects bus prior to operation for safety purposes.  Cleans windshields and headlights.  Cleans the interior and exterior of buses as needed, including, but not limited to, picking up debris, sweeping and mopping floor, and wiping and cleaning upholstery. 
• Services bus with fuel and oil. Performs routine checks of belts, braking, turning signals, and lighting.  Inspects hydraulic lifts.  Reports problems or equipment malfunctions. 
• Maintains appropriate behavior among students on buses and while the bus is parked at bus stops. Follows District policies regarding the student control and contact with parents and the public. 
• Reports incidents affecting the safety of students.  Maintains records of all trips.  Files accident reports.  Completes accurate records as required by State and federal laws and policies.
• Attends scheduled safety meetings and continuing education programs.  Performs first aid or emergency assistance. 
• May transport students and chaperones on field trips to various locations making departure and arrival time as scheduled.
• Removes graffiti and other material from bus interiors.
 
Custodial, Grounds, Warehousing Services and General Labor 
• Cleans, dusts, and disinfects restrooms including floors, stalls, toilets, sinks, urinals, and fixtures.  Removes trash and waste. Cleans trash receptacles and replaces liners. 
• Cleans public walkways, entry, and use areas including, but not limited to hallways, stairways, cafeterias, and meeting rooms.  Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains, door handles, and door push plates. 
• Sweeps, vacuums, and cleans carpeted and hard surface floors and baseboards, spot cleaning as necessary and wet mopping on a regularly scheduled basis. 
• May participate in heavy cleaning projects such as refinishing of hard floors and tiled areas and shampooing of carpets and fabric furniture.
• May participate in set up and take down of seating and equipment for events, including theater and gymnasium use.
• May perform ‘helper’ duties of a Maintenance Specialist I on an intermittent basis such as and not limited to, minor repair, servicing and maintenance to structures and fixtures, plumbing adjustments, oiling of door hinges and glide tracks, and replacing lights.
• Mows and edges lawns.  Trims shrubs and hedges.  Operates and cleans power riding lawn mowers, power blowers, and other motorized equipment requiring similar skill.
• Assists with planting and cultivating of trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs. Spades, applies nutrients, and otherwise prepares grounds for planting.
• Removes weeds, blows, rakes, and removes trash and debris from walkways, culverts, stairways, roadways, planters, and parking. Maintains in-ground drains and culverts.
• Unloads, checks, and shelves incoming materials, equipment and supplies.  Receives merchandise and unloads trucks using a hand truck or, if certified, a forklift.  May deliver inventory to school sites.
• Completes work order requests for maintenance services, as necessary. Completes departmental forms for internal use.
• Documents work activities, inspections, unanticipated occurrences, and SDS sheets.
• Performs other duties as assigned that support the objectives of the position.

Qualifications:
  
• Knowledge and Skills:
  • Requires a complete working knowledge and understanding of safe bus driving practices sufficient to recognize problems and take appropriate action.  Requires working knowledge of the operations of specially equipped buses.  Requires working knowledge and understanding of State laws, rules and regulations and Education Code sections pertaining to school bus operations and pupil transportation, including those for students requiring accommodations.  Requires knowledge of routine equipment servicing. Requires a basic knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial care and routine facilities maintenance. Must have a basic knowledge of work hazards and safe work techniques, including lifting procedures.  Requires knowledge of first aid practices.  Requires sufficient knowledge of English language to prepare travel and safety logs and prepare work orders.  Requires sufficient communication skills to exercise patience and maintain harmony within a work team and with students and parents. 
• Abilities:
  • The position requires the ability to perform all of the duties of the position with minimal supervision.  Requires ability to drive a school bus safely and efficiently while keeping to well-established schedules.  Requires the ability to read and write sufficiently to perform all of the duties of the position including understanding applicable laws, regulations and codes required.  Requires the ability to use special devices and equipment for the transport of students with mobility problems.  Requires the ability to maintain order among students, both while driving and at bus stops.  Must be able to recognize malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate action.  Requires the ability to maintain an assigned vehicle in clean and safe operating condition.  Requires the ability to administer first aid to ill or injured students.  Must learn designated bus routes, including stops and traffic hazards.  Must be able to perform routine servicing. Requires the ability to maintain required records.  Requires the ability to work productively with peers, students, parents, and members of the general public.
Education and Experience:
• High School diploma or GED.
• Successful completion of 20 hours of classroom instruction related to skills, regulations, and safety requirements for driving a school bus and successful completion of 20 hours of instruction behind the wheel of a school bus. 
• May require one year of custodial or maintenance experience.

Licenses and Certificates:
• Requires valid Commercial Class A or B Driver’s License;
• Medical examination card;
• Valid California Special Driver Certificate with P&S Endorsements.
• Valid First Aid Certification (if #6 restriction)
