    Job Description

     

    Position: Special Education Director

     

    Reports To: Superintendent

     

    Employment Status: Regular / Full-time

     

    FLSA Status: Exempt

     

    Summary:

     

    The Special Education Director ensures that appropriate special education services are provided to students with disabilities in compliance with state and federal regulations. The Director leads and supports instructional and operational efforts related to special education programs across the district.

     

    Note: The following lists are not ranked in order of importance.

     

    Essential Functions

     
    • Ensure the safety and well-being of students.

    • Develop and implement district policies and procedures in compliance with federal and state special education laws.

    • Communicate relevant laws, regulations, and practices to school personnel.

    • Provide consultation and support to classroom teachers to align evaluations, IEPs, and daily instruction.

    • Facilitate parent conferences, IEP development, and periodic reviews.

    • Support curriculum planning, staff development, evaluation procedures, and classroom management strategies.

    • Oversee the implementation and maintenance of the Special Education data entry systems.

    • Provide professional development to educators, parents, aides, administrators, and general education staff.

    • Conduct annual evaluations of special education programs and report findings to administration.

    • Supervise classroom and office staff assigned to special education.

    • Ensure proper staffing of certified personnel in special education classrooms.

    • Maintain and protect confidential student and staff information.

    • Respond to inquiries and communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and the community.

    • Promote positive relationships and public perception through professional demeanor.

    • Attend required meetings, including IEP, ETR, and 504 sessions.

    • Demonstrate punctuality, regular attendance, and a strong work ethic.

    • Work collaboratively with staff and stakeholders.

    • Oversee building programs and ensure compliance with state and local codes.

    • Manage procurement of supplies and equipment in coordination with the Assistant Superintendent.

    • Serve as liaison with community agencies and external resources.

    • Participate in recruitment and hiring of special education staff.

    • Assist with writing and securing special education grants.

    • Represent the district in local, state, and regional activities upon request.

    • Monitor and address student attendance issues.

    • Recommend staff renewals or non-renewals to the Superintendent.

    • Conduct regular staff meetings.

    • Prepare and submit budget requests for special education programs and services.

    • Complete all state reports and audits related to Special Education

    • Manage, Coordinate and Evaluate Renhill Aides for the district 

    • Participate in manifestation determination meetings and support SPED related discipline issues

    • Coordinate and manage all SPED related services including both Ontario and contracted employees and contracts
       

     

    Other Duties and Responsibilities

     
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
       

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Master’s degree from an accredited university.

    • Valid Ohio administrative or special education license/certificate.

    • Minimum of three years of experience teaching students with low-incidence disabilities.

    • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of special education programming and regulations.

    • Training in Crisis Intervention.

    • Valid driver’s license.

    • Other qualifications as determined appropriate by the Superintendent or Board of Education.

    • Comprehensive knowledge of IDEA and special education policies.

    • Proficiency with computers and office technology.

    • Knowledge of public school operations, academic programming, and school finance.

    • Frequent physical activity including sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and pushing/pulling (up to 300 lbs, e.g., wheelchair assistance).
