Job Summary:
The School-Based Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLP-A), as a member of the Lake Oconee Academy team, works under the supervision of of a certified speech-language pathologist in implementation of services for children/students with speech, language, cognitive, voice, oral muscular, augmentative/alternative communication disorders, and hearing impairments. 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 
1.Assists the SLP with speech-language and hearing screenings (without clinical interpretation of results). 
 
2.Assist with informal documentation as directed by the speech-language pathologist.
 
3.Follow documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising speech-language pathologist.
 
4.Have full knowledge of and in complete compliance with ASHA Code of Ethics, ASHA guidelines for SLP-As, and regulatory/licensure laws, and all facilities guidelines and protocols where SLP-A is working.
 
5.Document student performance (e.g. tallying data for the speech language pathologist to use, preparing charts, records, and graphs) and report this information to the supervising speech-language pathologist.
 
6.Assist SLP during the assessment of students.
 
7.Perform clerical duties to include:
 
1. Material for treatment and education information packets preparation
2. Copying
3. Scheduling activities as directed by the SLP
4. Reception duties
5. Ordering supplies and equipment
6. Filing
7. Chart checks
8. Ensuring all necessary forms and other paperwork completed and received
 
1. Perform checks and maintenance of equipment. 
2. Support the supervising SLP in research projects, in service training, and public relations programs.
3. Assist with departmental operations which includes but is not limited to:
   1. Scheduling
   2. Record Keeping
   3. Safety/maintenance of supplies and equipment 
4. Collect data for monitoring quality improvement
5. Maintains the confidentiality of information pertaining to students and their families
6. Respects and appropriately considers age, gender, cultural/linguistic background, and related factors when providing services.
7. Exhibit compliance with regulations and speech-language pathology assistant’s job responsibilities and keeps accurate and detailed records/documentation of direct and indirect observation self assessment, feedback, time-logs, activity records, continuing education documentation, and individual learning plans
 
Supplemental Duties and Responsibilities:
 
1. Participates in faculty meetings and committees as requested by the SLP.
2. Participates in conferences and in-services trainings as requested by the SLP.
3. Participates in research, development, reviews, and data collection of best practice patterns as requested by the SLP.
 
Qualifications:
 
1. The SLP-A must have one of the following:
   1. Associate’s degree from a SLP-A program recognized by ASHA;
   2. Bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology
   3. Associate’s and/or Bachelor’s degree by accredited institution and 80 or more observation hours of an ASHA accredited SLP
2. Completion of training program that is 40 or more hours of instruction and and is competency based, that has been turned in and approved by the Georgia state board
3. Fieldwork experience of a minimum of 80 clock hours
 
Preferred Qualifications:
 
1. Experience in a school setting, particularly with literacy and language interventions.
2. Knowledge of phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, and classroom-based language strategies.
3. Familiarity with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools.
4. Experience working with school-aged children, preferably in an educational setting.
5. Strong collaboration and communication skills.
6. Ability to follow therapy plans and adapt strategies to meet student needs.
 
Working Conditions:
 
1. Works primarily in elementary school classrooms, resource rooms, and speech therapy spaces.
2. Engages with students, teachers, and support staff in a dynamic school environment.
 
Reporting Relationships
The SLP-A is directly and indirectly supervised by a certified SLP. The supervising SLP maintains legal and moral responsibility for all services provided by the SLP=A, and ensures that such services are in compliance with the ASHA Code of Ethics, ASHA Guidelines for SLP-As, state and regulatory/licensure laws, and the school guidelines and procedures.
