Position Summary:  The position of Transportation Aide, under the direction of the transportation administrator, is responsible for assisting the Bus Driver in the safe transportation of special education students of the Waterford School District.  Other duties involve managing the operation of the bus to ensure a safe and hazard free environment for all students.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
• High School Diploma
• Some experience with individuals with special needs desirable but not required.
• Knowledge of first aid procedures, preferred.
• Present a professional, courteous and tactful image and represent the district in a positive manner
• Must demonstrate an ability to understand and relate to students with special needs.
 
Essential Functions:
• To provide direct/indirect supervision of students while they are being transported by the school bus.
• To assist the bus driver and school staff with the safe loading and unloading of students.
• Operate equipment, including wheelchairs, tie –downs, seat belts, harnesses, mechanical lift and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
• Assist driver in assuring seat belts, harness and wheel chair tie downs are secured as required.
• To ensure that pupils are seated and secure before and while the vehicle is in motion.
• Physically assist in the lifting and moving as students as appropriate.
• To provide safe and comfortable conditions for pupils who ride on WSD buses.       
• Maintain close communication with the bus driver and designated special education personnel.
• Assist with all emergency situations as directed.
• Administer medication as specified in a student Plan of Care.
• To observe pupil behavior and take positive action in correcting behavioral problems by using approved techniques.
• Physical ability to lift and carry 40-60 pounds, as well as bend, stoop walk, reach overhead and stand for as many as four to eight hours per day (depending on assignment).
• Other duties as assigned.

• Possess or willing to obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
• Meet Federal DOT drug/alcohol testing requirements
• Must be flexible with hours
 
Essential Functions:
• Conduct pre-trip and post trip inspections of your assigned vehicle as required.
• Use established routes and designated bus stops.
• Conduct emergency evacuation drills as required.
• Instruct passenger riders regarding safety.
• Drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather.
• Drive with safety of passengers as first priority.
• Establish favorable working relationships with other drivers, maintenance personnel, bus attendants, teachers, passengers, principals, and total school or program staff.
• Bus drivers shall achieve self-improvement by attending training sessions, and annual in-service conducted by Waterford School District.
