QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
 
1. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
2. Valid New Jersey standard certificate as school social worker or school counselor.
3. Valid New Jersey Student Assistance Coordinator Certification.
4. Valid Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor credential issued by the New Jersey Alcohol and Drug Counselor Committee of the Marriage and Family Board
5. Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in a school.
6. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with at risk students. Knowledge of behavioral modifications and intervention strategies which will improve student behavior and motivate disaffected students.
8. Demonstrated knowledge of substance abuse curriculum development, counseling and staff development

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Direct Assistance to Students and Parents:
1. Assesses students' drug/alcohol involvement and makes appropriate referral to treatment facilities when necessary.
2. Works in cooperation with treatment facility, counselors, parents, school personnel and students in developing and following through with the students' aftercare plan.
3. Facilitates conferences with parents or child's guardian to review, discuss and/or implement appropriate steps and stages of intervention plan and options.
4. Provides short-term counseling or group counseling for students with substance abuse problems or concerns.
5. Implements and coordinates parent education programs related to substance awareness.
 
Administrative Duties:
1. Assists in the coordination of supplemental programs and guest speakers. 
2. Assists in the research and review of instructional materials for possible purchase and use.
3. Develops and coordinates a referral system and intervention services for early identification of students who are at-risk for substance abuse or demonstrating symptoms of substance use and abuse, coordinates a referral system with local, state and other services, providers or agencies.
4. Assesses the district's prevention/intervention program on an annual basis and makes recommendations.
5. Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education activities and other professional growth activities.
6. Maintains a continuing review of statutes and codes related to drug and alcohol programming.
7. Assists with the development and annual review of policies and procedures regarding substance abuse, use and chemical health education, and recommends changes to administration.
 
Interaction with Other Staff and with Community Groups:
1. Works in cooperation with resources available within the school district (i.e. child study team, school counselors, school social worker, nurses, etc.).
2. Assists in the design, implementation and coordination of staff development related to substance awareness.
3. Provides in-service education for all teachers and staff responsible for the delivery of chemical health education.
4. Serves as a resource to district personnel on substance awareness/abuse issues as well as on the
 
1. availability of training programs. Provides training for all school staff in intervention and referral procedures.
 
5. Participates in the community-based Municipal Alliance to facilitate the liaison between school and community.
6. Provides coordination of school-based prevention programs with community-based prevention programs.
7. Develops community awareness through active participation as a school liaison to appropriate community groups and organizations.
 
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Crisis intervention and participates in student support team and intervention and referral service meetings.
2. Performs other duties which may be within the scope of his/her employment and certification as assigned by the Director of Student Support Services.
 
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Life
 
SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD, AND UNION AFFILIATION
1. Salary: Compensation is competitive and based on administrative experience. 
2. The salary range for this position is $58,500 to $103,900.
3. Employment Period: 10 Month Calendar
4. Union Affiliation: Newark Teachers Union (NTU)

8.  Participates in activities that promote professional growth for staff.

9. Assist in the evaluation of instructional and non-instructional staff at the discretion of the Director of Student Life and performs related work.

10. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Student Support Services.



 
II. Organizational Leadership
 
1. Establishes and executes organizational systems and district/departmental goals and initiatives

2. Develops and monitors strategies for high level collaboration among faculty and staff.

3. Communicates effectively and maintains a positive disposition in all circumstances to ensure an outcome that promotes student academic achievement, staff professional development, and District-wide success.

Bridge Coach

The Superintendent invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Bridge Coach with the Office of Student Support Services.
 
 
DEFINITION:  The Newark Board of Education is currently looking to hire a college student, who is a graduate of Newark Public Schools, to serve as a “Bridge Coach,” who will work with graduating high school seniors to help them apply to and matriculate into college. Bridge Coaches will work under the supervision of the designated school counselor from August 2024 to August 2025. Bridge Coaches will be responsible for working approximately 430 hours over the course of the year (including virtual and in-person training, and in-person school-based work).
 
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
 
1. Currently attending college in New Jersey
2. Be a graduate from a Newark Public School
3. Enrolled part-time or full- time in college as a Sophomore or Junior, in good standing, in the 2024-25 school year
4. Strong written and verbal communication and time management skills
5. Demonstrated Commitment to the work of supporting student opportunity and success
6. Letter of recommendation from current professor or mentor. 
7. Proficient in Microsoft and Google suite 
 
 
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
       A. School Year:  August 2024 – June 2025
 
1. Working on-site at the school approximately 10 hours/week from September to June to assist students with paperwork and tasks involved in applying for college and career opportunities, including college applications and enrollment process.
2. Attending all College Bridge and Mentor Newark training (in-person and virtual) starting in August.
3. Facilitating workshops for seniors throughout the year and help plan and lead school-wide events and trips related to the college process.
4. Supporting students through the financial aid application and verification process.
5. Tracking student progress through the college application process and meet weekly with college counselor to review all graduating seniors’ status to guide the work that should be completed.
 
2. Summer:  July 2025 – August 2025
 
1. Working approximately 10 hours/week in July and August of 2025 to assist students with the paperwork and tasks involved in enrolling in post-secondary destinations.
2. Attend all College Bridge and Mentor Newark training (in-person and virtual).
3. Tracking student progress through application and matriculation steps and meet weekly with supervisor to review students’ progress. 
 
KNOWLEGE AND ABILITIES:
 
1. Be able to work in-person at their high school placement.
2. Understanding of obstacles encountered in applying to and registering for college.
3. Strong written and verbal communication and time management skills.
4. Demonstrated Commitment to the work of supporting student opportunity and success.
