Essential Job Functions: The special education paraprofessional’s role is to assist the teacher and allow more effective utilization of the teacher’s abilities and professional knowledge. By fulfilling this role, improved instruction and service for children is facilitated. The roles of the teacher and the paraprofessional require different levels of training and experience. The paraprofessional will be expected to:

Special Education paraprofessionals may:
a. Be left alone in the classroom, in a planned way, when the supervising teacher is called away.
b. Work without direct supervision with individuals or groups of students on concepts introduced by the supervising teacher.
c. Have specific instructional and management responsibility for students.
Special Education paraprofessionals may not:
a. Be used as a substitute for a certified teacher.
b. Teach new concepts and skills.
c. Be given primary responsibility for working with individual students
