General Summary: |
Under general supervision develops 21st century lifelong learners that are self directed through engaging and appropriate gifted curriculum in accordance with the district’s mission and vision. |
Essential Functions: |
- Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
- Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, parents, colleagues and other stakeholders to foster student learning.
- Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning environment for all students; creates a flexible classroom setting to stimulate active learning for gifted students; maintains positive behavior support and classroom management systems.
- Supervises student activities in other settings such as the playground, lunchroom, arrival and dismissal locations, etc. as assigned.
- Demonstrates a variety of 21st century teaching skills to foster independent, creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers.
- Designs and facilitates engaging, high level, sophisticated learning experiences and applications appropriate to prepare students for a 21st century global, knowledge-based society.
- Teaches concepts and skills to different grade level students who are accepted into the gifted and talented program; implements district defined curriculum and learning experiences designed for gifted and talented students.
- Stays abreast of the latest research for serving the needs of gifted learners.
- Administers state mandated qualifying tests to students.
- Demonstrates and evaluates the effectiveness of both formative and summative assessments; collaborates with other staff members to analyze assessment data in relation to student learning and develops instructional strategies to close the learning and performance gap; evaluates contributions in group projects.
- Prepares various records and forms such as lesson plans, daily and weekly activity plans, assessments, material requisitions, discipline reports, etc.
- Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
- Organizes classrooms and other settings for daily instruction.
- Selects, requests, and maintains an inventory of instructional aides, technology tools, equipment, and supplies needed for daily activities; provides for safe storage and proper use of all materials, equipment and tools.
- Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of student records, instructional efficiency, and professional development.
- Meets with parents, administrators and school counselors as needed to discuss student performance, social and emotional needs, behavior, and personal and academic goals and expectations, etc.; issues reports in accordance with school board policy to inform parents/guardians of students’ progress; suggests interventions and enrichment opportunities as appropriate.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education/Work Experience: |
- Bachelor’s degree in elementary education or related area of discipline with previous student teaching experience; minimum of three years classroom experience and minimum of six hours of instruction in gifted education; or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Valid South Carolina teaching certification

Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district that pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of school policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and to complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public. |
Working Conditions: |
Conducts duties in a classroom environment and on field studies with no significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Requires constant attention working with students. Physical demands are restricted to classroom work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items up to twenty-five pounds. Occasional travel is required; limited overnight travel required. Assignment to multiple schools may be necessary to accommodate scheduling and staffing needs. |
Responsibility: |
Responsible for supervision of students in classrooms, field studies and other instructional settings. Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment; responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions and safety issues. |
Evaluation: |
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board’s policy on evaluation of certified personnel. |
