Varsity Head Volleyball Coach
This job description's intent is to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that coaches (especially head coaches) shall exercise common sense, good leadership skills, and good judgment. (NOTE: All Varsity Head Coaches must be certified staff members in the school district)
Athletically - reports to the Athletic Director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principal.
Academically (and overall) - reports to his/her building principal or program director.
Supervises assistant coaches (in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal(s)).
Goals
1. To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary to realize individual and team success.
2. To instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to positive character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and a sense of accomplishment in student-athletes.
3. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.
Qualifications
1. Can organize and supervise a successful high school athletic program.
2. Has previous successful coaching experience in this specific varsity sport (high school preferred)
3. Has substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and, at the same time, continues to examine new theories, practices, and procedures.
4. Serves as an appropriate role model for student-athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develops a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Lee County School System and is responsible for their implementation.
2. Knows existing GHSA regulations and implements them correctly and consistently. Helps to interpret rules for assistant coaches.
3. Understands the proper administrative chain of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
4. Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by the Lee County coaching staff. Organizes conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure familiarity with the varsity program.
5. Trains and informs staff, encouraging professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance according to school system policy.
6. Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, analyzes staff effectiveness at the season's end, and evaluates all assistants.
7. Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation among staff, parents, and students.
8. Creates and organizes annual schedules for the entire Lee County program, completing transportation requests in a timely manner, and communicating requirements for tournaments and special events.
9. Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sports events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
10. Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning student physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
11. Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of equipment.
12. Advises the athletic director and recommend policy or procedural changes.
13. Serves as a mentor to each athlete to promote positive physical, mental, and emotional development, including character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
14. Gives constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.
15. By his/her presence at all practices, games, and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant.
16. Provides training rules and any other regulations to each athlete who is considered a participant.
17. Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
18. Completes paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to the Athletic Director or another school administrator within 24 hours.
19. Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
20. Determines discipline and delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary.
21. Maintains professional contact with parents at all times.
22. Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
23. Is responsible for operating within budget appropriations.
24. Is accountable for all equipment and collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and submit annual inventory and current records concerning same.
25. Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.
26. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices and authorizes who may enter, issue, or requisition equipment.
27. Enforces that athletes are only in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
28. If applicable, examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on the general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sports equipment.
29. Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the area if custodians are not on duty.
30. Instills in each player respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.
31. Organizes preseason meetings for parents, coaches, players, and other community members.
32. Promotes the sport within the school and the district by recruiting athletes who are not in another sports program and promotes the sport outside the school through news media, little league programs, or in any other feasible manner.
33. Responsible for the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
34. Responsible for maintaining good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
35. Presents information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
36. Performs other duties which may be assigned by the athletic director and/or principal or under the direction of the Superintendent.
