Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Library Media Specialist, the Library/Media Technician supports the district’s mission by assisting the Library Media Specialist in the administration of the school’s instructional library/media program. In the absence of the Library Media Specialist, the Library/Media Technician works under the supervision of the building principal or designee. The Library/Media Technician supports staff, students, families, and community members in the use of the library/media center and performs technical and clerical tasks related to the acquisition, processing, cataloging, maintenance and recordkeeping of the center.
Terms of Employment: Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.), 192 days per year; typically starting two days prior to the start of school and ending one day after the last student attendance day. The schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the district.
- This position is covered by the SEIU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- The successful candidate for this position must be fingerprinted at the applicant's expense. Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check and clearance by Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Library:
- Maintain a diversified collection of print, non-print and electronic resources to support curricular needs
- Enter bibliographic data electronically for cataloging, maintaining and monitoring the circulation system
- Maintain and update patron information and records; integrate those records as well as fees and fines with the student information system; reconcile the electronic receipt system with the library circulation software to ensure the accuracy of outstanding fees and fines; work to resolve related patron inquiries
- Manage the circulation and storage of library/media materials; check in and shelve materials; repair books and other materials; record and maintain circulation statistics; prepare overdue notices; conduct annual inventory; recommend materials for weeding; discard unusable materials
- Prepare reports, notices and correspondence as required
- Assist students with networked search stations in the library/media center
- Assist students, teachers and patrons with research, location, technology, and checkout of curriculum-related materials and items based on personal interests
- Receive and sort mail including periodicals, catalogues, professional publications, invoices, solicitations, etc.
- Collaborate with other district library/media technicians to provide continuity of services, inter-library loans, and shared resources
- Collaborate and maintain communication with the local library to promote their programs for the benefit of students, families, staff, and the community
- Understand and use various computer-based software programs utilized in the district’s library/media program
- Maintain the décor and displays in the library
- Assist patrons in bibliographical citing and adherence to copyright laws and policies
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community partners
- Attend required trainings
- Maintain a neat, clean personal appearance and traits of a good role model for students; work apparel should be appropriate for a safe and professional work environment
- Provide a safe learning environment for all students
- Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position
- Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned
Technology:
- Assist students, faculty, and parents with the use of internet applications, printers, copiers, and other devices
- Assist students in the use of the library’s Destiny program by searching for and locating materials
- Perform basic troubleshooting of networked entities such as computers, laptops, and printers
- Monitor and guide students in the acceptable use of the internet; notify appropriate staff of disciplinary issues
- Record and inform technology personnel of any and all issues pertaining to the library/media center’s computers, i-Pads, Chromebooks, printers, copiers, phones, and other devices
- Assist students with access and troubleshooting of their digital accounts including the student information system, computer logins, and Google account services
- Check out loaner devices to library patrons
- Send loaner devices to the Technology Department for repair
- Inventory and store devices issued to students
- Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned
Instructional:
- Collaborate with teachers in the selection and presentation of materials including online resources to support a variety of classroom projects
- Promote student and staff reading for information, learning and pleasure
- Assist individual students attending the library during other classes, lunch, and before and after school
- Prepare collections of books for teachers requesting classroom sets of specific subjects
- Prepare instructional materials, exhibits and bulletin board/display areas
- Attend district scheduled workshops and in-service programs to stay current on library instruction and industry news as required
- Schedule classes as needed, as well as meetings and other functions including after-school activities in the library
- Complete required training and proctor state testing
- Oversee classes and/or student testing as necessary
- Approve, supervise, and instruct student aides
- Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience
- Proof of high school graduation or equivalent and at least ONE of the following is required:
- Associate’s degree or higher or equivalent (48 semester/72 quarter hours) from an accredited college or university OR
- A passing score on a state-approved Paraeducator Assessment
- Willingess and ability to complete professional development courses required by the State of Washington towards Paraeducator certification
- A valid CPR card, or the ability to obtain a card, is required upon hire
- Successful completion of a basic skills assessment may be required prior to offer of employment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience working in a school or public library
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Possess a genuine enthusiasm for working with students, staff and the community
- Ability to comprehend the educational levels at which students are performing and related library materials at these levels
- Ability to supervise, guide and assist students in the use of the library, as well as deal with disruptive behaviors and emergencies
- Working knowledge and the ability to assist teachers and students in the check-out, operation and simple maintenance of computers, Chromebooks, and a variety of library-related equipment
- Working knowledge of or willingness to acquire skills to automate and maintain circulation using the Dewey Decimal System including cataloging and inventory
- Basic accounting skills; proficiency in correct grammar, spelling and English usage; excellent proofreading ability
- Sufficient skills to assist with online research; basic knowledge of bibliographic citing and copyright issues
- Proficiency in a variety of common business office equipment (e.g., phones, copiers, printers, etc.)
- Proficiency in common office software and web-based applications (e.g., e-mail, social media platforms, word processing and electronic spreadsheets)
- Ability to gain proficiency in the district’s library management software
- Willingness and ability to learn new systems
- Ability to participate in activities outside the normal workday
- Accurate filing skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a diverse population of staff, students, families, and community members while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor and supporting an atmosphere of warmth, cooperation and service to others

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Some lifting may be required; ability to occasionally lift at least 40 pounds with assistance is required
- Some carrying, reaching, pushing and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling is required
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time is required
- Significant fine finger dexterity is required
Salary: $22.97/hour after successful completion of a probationary period of 60 working days/480 hours of employment (whichever is less). The probationary rate of pay is $20.68/hour. Payrates thereafter are based on the SEIU salary schedule.
Benefits: This position is eligible for a generous benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their qualified dependents. Employer-paid basic life, long-term disability, and AD & D insurance are available to the employee only. Additional benefits include retirement through the Washington State Department of Retirement and optional supplemental benefits including supplemental life, long-term disability, FSA, DCAP, and deferred compensation. Paid leave benefits include two (2) days of personal leave and ten (10) days of sick leave per school year pro-rated based on the employee's hire date. Paid holidays include: Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day following Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, and Memorial Day. Juneteenth is a paid holiday when the holiday falls within the employee's work year. Labor Day is a paid holiday when the start of school precedes the holiday or when an employee returns to a regularly scheduled work week or an approved scheduled day before the holiday. Additional available paid leave benefits and terms of paid holidays are governed by the SEIU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
