    Position: Director of Facilities and Operations

    Reports To: Executive Director of Finance and Business Operations

    Schedule: 52 weeks/40 hours per week. 

    Starting Salary:  $90,090 (salary commensurate with experience), include a full array of benefits. 
     
    Kentwood Public Schools (KPS) is one of the largest school districts in West Michigan, serving over 9,500 students across 17 schools and other facilities totaling approximately 2 million square footage.  KPS is currently making significant investments in its facilities, utilizing the 2021 bond totaling $192 million to enhance infrastructure, learning spaces, and operational efficiencies.

    Position Purpose: The Director of Facilities and Operations is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight for the district’s facilities, maintenance, custodial services, and grounds-keeping operations. This position ensures the safe, efficient, and high-quality operation of all district buildings by managing facilities staff, overseeing capital planning, maintaining compliance with regulations, and implementing operational improvements. The Director will collaborate with district leadership, school administrators, and external partners to develop cost-effective facilities management strategies that align with the district’s operational goals. Additionally, this role provides authorization for changes in physical plant operations and functions while ensuring effective budgetary oversight and safety compliance.  

    Essential job functions include but are not limited to the following: 
    • Departmental Leadership & Supervision
      • Provide strategic direction and operational leadership for all district facilities, maintenance, custodial, and grounds services.
      • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
    • Facilities & Maintenance Oversight
      • Oversee district-wide maintenance operations, ensuring buildings and grounds remain in optimal condition.
      • Conduct routine facility inspections to assess structural integrity, energy efficiency, and safety.
      • Ensure timely response to emergency maintenance issues and facility-related concerns.
    • Custodial & Operations Management
      • Oversee custodial operations to ensure all district buildings meet high cleanliness, sanitation, and safety standards.
      • Manage custodial scheduling, staffing, and operational efficiency across multiple locations.
      • Implement infection control measures to maintain safe learning environments.
      • Develop and enforce quality control measures to uphold high service standards.
    • Capital Projects & Long-Term Planning
      • Oversee facility construction, renovation, and capital improvement projects, working with architects, engineers, and contractors.
      • Maintain and update the district’s multi-year facilities plan, ensuring alignment with budgetary priorities and district growth.
      • Oversee energy efficiency initiatives and sustainability programs.
    • Budgeting & Financial Management
      • Collaborate with the Business Office to develop and manage the annual operations budget.
      • Ensure cost-effective procurement of maintenance supplies, custodial equipment, and contracted services.
      • Monitor and manage capital project budgets to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance with district purchasing policies.
    • Regulatory Compliance & Safety
      • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA, MIOSHA, ADA, environmental standards, and fire safety codes.
      • Maintain oversight of AHERA compliance, HVAC inspections, and emergency response planning.
      • Collaborate with district safety personnel and external agencies to develop security and emergency preparedness procedures.
      • Oversee district-wide energy conservation and efficiency programs.
      • Monitor fire and security alarm system inspections and maintenance.
    • Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
      • Collaborate with principals, school leadership, and event coordinators to ensure facilities support instructional and extracurricular activities.
      • Establish and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with external vendors, contractors and municipal agencies to manage maintenance, construction and safety compliance.
      • Ensure effective coordination between custodial, maintenance, and operations teams to support school programs, special events, and facility rentals.
      • Clearly communicate and interpret district procedures, policies, and facility-related regulations.
    Additional Duties:  Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Executive Director of Finance and Business Operations and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

    Travel Requirements:  Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Leadership & Team Management: Experience managing large teams and multiple facility-related departments.
    • Operations & Budget Oversight: Strong budgeting, financial planning, and cost control expertise.
    • Regulatory & Safety Compliance: Knowledge of building codes, environmental laws, and safety regulations.
    • Project & Construction Management: Experience with capital projects, facility renovations, and infrastructure planning.
    • Problem-Solving & Crisis Response: Ability to quickly address facility issues and emergencies.
    • Communication & Stakeholder Collaboration: Strong skills in building partnerships, engaging school leaders, and maintaining external relationships.
    • Ability to work in an economically, culturally and racially diverse environment.
    Qualifications:
    A combination of education, certifications, and experience will be considered.
    • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
    • Minimum 5+ years of leadership experience in facilities management, maintenance, or operations, preferred.
    • Experience in general maintenance, mechanical/electrical systems, HVACR, facilities planning, water testing, and preventive maintenance.
    • Relevant trade certifications or licenses (such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or facilities management certifications), preferred.
    • Facilities Planning Certification or other applicable certifications, preferred
    • Strong project management and team leadership experience.

    • Work Environment:  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate.  
    • Mental Functions:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.
