    Position: ASD Supported Resource Teacher
                    Effective 2024-2025 School Year

    Position Purpose: Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Middle School Supported Resource Room Teacher facilitates student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through the implementation of district-approved curriculum. This position documents teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes, addresses the specific educational needs of individual students, creates a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment, and provides feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals. This position will provide supported resources to students with varying needs, including those identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), working collaboratively with Special Education (SE) teams and General Education (Gen Ed) staff to provide appropriate inclusion opportunities.

    Essential Performance Responsibilities:
    • Develop and administer middle school curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives as appropriate.
    • Create lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into engaging learning experiences to optimize instructional time.
    • Teach all required subject matters assigned to the grade level, including reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music.
    • Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning.
    • Collaborate with classroom teachers to provide inclusion opportunities for students on the caseload, including those with ASD.
    • Demonstrate the ability to differentiate instruction using various styles and inspire mixed culture and ability classes by creating challenging and engaging learning opportunities for all students.
    • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and modify instructional methods to fit individual students' needs.
    • Conduct individual and small group instruction as needed.
    • Instruct students in the principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the Kentwood Public Schools.
    • Ensure student conduct conforms to the school's standards and district policies, maintaining standards of behavior needed for a functional learning atmosphere.
    • Continue to acquire professional knowledge and stay current on developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research.
    • Share knowledge and strategies with colleagues to promote a school-wide understanding of inclusive practices.
    • Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievements, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
    • Prepare and present progress reports and participate in IEP meetings.
    • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
    • Provide resources and support to families to help them understand and advocate for their child's needs.
    • Coordinate with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
    • Work collaboratively with SE teams and Gen Ed staff to create and maintain inclusive classroom environments and facilitate the integration of students with ASD into Gen Ed classrooms, ensuring appropriate accommodations and modifications are in place.
    • Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, and other supplies and equipment, maintaining inventory records.
    • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
    Additional Duties: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

    Equipment: Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephones.

    Travel Requirements: Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
    • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
    • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
    • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
    • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
    • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
    • Knowledge of research-based interventions for reading and math.
    • Knowledge of Response to Intervention (RTI) and behavior support strategies.
    • Understanding of a “learning styles” approach to instruction and respect for students’ multiple intelligences.
    • Ability to work in an economically, culturally, and racially diverse environment.
    • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with staff, students, and administration.

    Qualifications:
    • Valid Michigan teaching certificate.
    • Endorsement in ASD, EI, CI, or LD.
    • Must meet State of Michigan Professional Development requirements.
    • EL certification or experience working with EL students preferred.
    • Experience working with students with ASD.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus.
    • Work Environment:  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. 
    • Mental Functions:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.
