    SALARY SCHEDULE:  Security Officer $16.25-$23.50 -  dependent upon experience 
    POSITION SCHEDULE:  12 Month

    POSITION SUMMARY 
    Guards school against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry.  Provides the security and/or safety of all property owned by Hillsboro R-3 School District.  Ensures a safe and secured environment for all students, faculty and staff. 
     
                ESSENTIAL DUTIES
    • Patrols property and buildings (exterior and interior), either by motor vehicle or foot, which ever is appropriate to the time, location, or event.
    • Examines doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure.
    • Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, and apprehends/detains persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts.
    • Inspects equipment and machinery to ascertain if tampering has occurred.
    • Watches for and reports irregularities such as fire hazards, fire and security alarms, exit lights, leaking water pipes, road hazards and security doors left unlocked.
    • Observes departing personnel to guard against theft of school property.
    • Informs the Assistant Superintendent of any vehicle violations during/outside of work that warrant a traffic ticket or may hinder the validity of Drivers License.
    • Records data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning of machinery or equipment, for use of supervisory staff.
    • Monitors the movement of motor vehicle traffic, its adherence to school regulations and general traffic laws.
    • Ensures bus loading and unloading areas are clear and ready at the appropriate times of the day.
    • Directs traffic when needed, on campus, at the entrances, and for school buses entering or crossing the highway.
    • Transports parcels, mail and money within the district as well as to the post office and bank.
    • Enforces the school’s parking regulations and permits.
    • Investigates the reason for a student’s absence, as requested and authorized by school personnel. 
    • Sounds alarm or calls police or fire department by telephone in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
    • Files reports with the Assistant Superintendent following each shift.
    • Responds, on request, to discipline problems, or other matters on school buses either on or off the campus.  Also, responds to bus accidents, to assist in whatever capacity is needed.
    • Reports major incidents, problems and/or hazards immediately to the proper authority, fire or police department, superintendent, assistant superintendent, building principal, or maintenance supervisor, whichever is most appropriate.
    • Be helpful to staff, students and parents.
    • Unlock car doors, help in assisting students.
    • Be non-confrontational as possible.
    • Be professional in dealing with people during all activities, try to keep situations from escalating.
    • Maintain the routine of responsibilities on one’s shift, any changes need to be discussed with work partner and supervisor.
    • Each shift covers for the other shift when one is absent.
    • Uniforms are to be neat and clean, with black shoes.
    MARGINAL DUTIES
    • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
    • Coordinates parking for school activities and special events.
    • Transports students to or from their residence or other location, as requested by authorized school personnel.
    • Regulates crowd control and ensures pedestrian safety daily and/or during school events.
    • Performs additional tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.

     QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or a minimum of 240 hours of academy training in the areas of safety, security, and policy work.
    • Must be 21 years of age
    • Valid and current Drivers License
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to talk or hear.
    MENTAL DEMANDS
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality; communicate clearly both orally and in writing
    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, may work near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to work in high, precarious places; outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold (weather); extreme heat (weather) and risk of electrical shock.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
    • This individual may be exposed to potentially hazardous bodily fluids.
