    SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION 

     

    QUALIFICATIONS: 

     

    1. Eligibility for Wyoming teacher certification through the State Department of Education/PTSB with endorsement in exceptional children K-12. 

     

    2. Continued education and training as required to maintain WY State certification

     

    3. Such additions to the above qualification as the Board and administration may find appropriate and acceptable. 

     

    REPORTS TO & EVALUATED BY: Director of Special Services & Building Principal 

     

    JOB GOAL: To provide exceptional children with individualized educational programming which will foster the achievement of their potential academically, emotionally, physically, and socially. 

     

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

     

    1. Appreciates the worth and dignity of each individual and treats each one with respect and tolerance. 

     

    2. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the location and at the times designated. 

     

    3. Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these desired outcomes to students. 

     

    4. Maintains high standards of appropriate classroom behavior. 

     

    5. Interprets and uses psycho-educational test data in developing classroom instructional programs. 

     

    6. Administers, scores, and interprets appropriate educational tests and/or screening instruments. 

     

    7. Formulates and conducts individual educational assessment using all formal and informal data, including information from parents/guardians. 

     

    8. Assists in development of Individual Education Programs (IEPs) based on formal and informal educational assessment. 

     

    9. Conducts on-going assessment by analyzing and evaluating students’ daily work and uses this information to develop instructional strategies and to provide student progress reports. 

     

    10. Follows District instructional scope and sequence for each subject area. 

     

    11. Uses both regular and special education curricula, adopted texts, and appropriate supplementary materials. 12. Incorporates current knowledge of each exceptionality and best instructional practices for the exceptionality into each student’s program. 

     

    13. Adapts teaching strategies to the individual student’s instructional needs and ability levels and, when appropriate, to preferred mode of learning. 

     

    14. Uses written lesson plans to help provide structure and consistency within a positive learning environment. 15. Offers students the option of and encourages the use of adapted materials and/or assistive devices when appropriate. 

     

    16. Employs a variety of instructional materials, e.g., print, video, audio, manipulative, and creative, and allows for a variety of response modes.

     

    17. Communicates and works cooperatively with administrators and regular education staff in implementing inclusion requirements of the students’ IEPs, e.g., resolving scheduling problems, monitoring student progress, and supporting regular education teachers. 

     

    18. Assists students in developing social and life skills conducive to success in a variety of environments. 

     

    19. Fosters the development of a positive self-image. 

     

    20. Accepts responsibility for increasing student success and preventing failure by motivating students, monitoring their performances, fostering successful learning experiences, and assisting development of realistic self-awareness and self-control. 

     

    21. Promotes appropriate integration with non disabled students. 

     

    22. Establishes a partnership relationship with parents to ensure ongoing communication and total program consistency, involving parents in their child’s instructional program to the greatest possible extent. 

     

    23. Collaborates with occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech/language clinicians, and other service providers to facilitate an integrated instructional program. 

     

    24. Keeps copies of current IEPs available in the classroom in a secured location maintaining confidentiality. 

     

    25. Serves as case manager for selected students. 

     

    26. Follows District procedures and due process for student identification/placement/service. 

     

    27. Functions as a resource person in the school, e.g., conducts in-service, models teaching techniques, etc. 28. Maintains appropriate confidentiality when entrusted with personal information pertaining to students or staff members. 

     

    29. Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. 

     

    30. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations. 31. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required. 

     

    32. Notifies administrative personnel when it is necessary to leave assigned building during the regular school day. 

     

    33. Cooperates with other staff members in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods. 

     

    34. Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials. 

     

    35. Accepts a share of responsibility for co-curricular activities as assigned including monitoring and supervision duties. 

     

    36. Provides for his/her own professional growth through an on-going program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning. 

     

    37. Knowledge of and being prepared to act in accordance with District and school emergency procedures. 

     

    38. Participates in in-service training programs as requested. 

     

    39. Follows District policies and procedures. 

     

    40. Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the building principal or Director of Special Services.

     

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and length of contract according to current provisions for certified staff members as established annually by the Board of Trustees. Eligible for benefits as provided in Administrative Regulations/Operational Procedures.
