RESPONSIBILTIES:
Teacher is responsible for supporting students with Autism at the elementary level. Develop lesson plans and provide direct and small group instruction. Responsible for lead teacher duties including supervising instructional assistant staff. Review and ensure instruction aligns with student IEP goals and objectives. Work with district and ISD providers to ensure student needs are met across related services. Teacher may assist with activities of daily living and positive behavior support plans.
This teacher role may include 3-4 weeks of ESY (Extended School Year) programming during summer break between June and August.
QUALIFICATIONS: The individual selected for this position will be the one who offers the best combination of training, experience and qualifications in accordance with the following:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an approved college or university.
- Valid, K-12 Special Education Certification from the State of Michigan with a SV (Autism Spectrum Disorder) endorsement preferred.
- Must have an SE, SM or SA endorsement, and be willing to work towards an SV (Autism Spectrum Disorder) endorsement. This would include completing a minimum of six semester credit hours per year to obtain ASD certification/endorsement.
- Ability to provide extended school year services to students as per IEP.
- Experience using ASL desireable.
- CPI training required.
- Shows evidence of successful experience as a Special Education teacher.
- Ability to work well with students, staff and parents.
- Ability to demonstrate mature judgment and moral and ethical behavior.
- Ability to project a positive outlook, manner and appearance.
- Regular, reliable attendance is an essential function of the job.
- Must meet the requirements of School Safety Legislation – Complete FBI fingerprints required.

Essential Functions
To provide structure and innovative instruction to students within the learning environment in order to meet all student's needs. The work includes the use of evidence-based assessment, instruction and intervention practices in the prevention, assessment, intervention and program design efforts that are integrated within the school. The teacher will work collaboratively with all members of the school and program to provide specially designed instruction in the areas determined by each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Qualifications - Minimum - Bachelor's Degree from an approved college or university.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with an SL (Deaf and Hard of Hearing) endorsement and a ZA (Early Childhood Special Education) endorsement.
- Demonstrated success in special education or support service working wtih students with D/HH.
- Experience in delivering instruction in subject area content.
- Ability to integrate technology into the curriculum.
- Ability to communicate informational ideas in spoken, written and American Sign Language for clear understanding.
- Responsible for lesson planning for academics, social emotional, adaptive, and behavioral needs.
- Willingness to participate in all phases of the instructional program.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification preferred, not required.
- CPI training required, or an understanding that certification or recertification is required.
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity, social justice and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities.
- Demonstrates the ability to examine the impact of education inequities in student achievement outcomes as it aligns with race, ethnicity, and social economic status.
- Ability to work well with students, staff and parents.
