Mechanic Qualifications
- A satisfactory driving record
- A satisfactory work record
- High School graduate or equivalent, or Vocational Trade School in Auto Diesel Mechanics
- Valid Mississippi Class B Commercial Driver License with “P” and “S” endorsements *Can be obtained within 180 days of employment
- Knowledge and experience to perform gas and diesel engine tune-ups; additionally, complete engine overhauls
- Knowledge in body repair of large vehicles
- Must be insurable by district insurance carrier
- Must be physically able to lift 100 lbs.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with school bus drivers
- ASE Certification is encouraged
- Must be able to use desktop computer, laptop computer, and/or smart phone for mechanical diagnostics, mechanical research, record keeping and job assignments.
Mechanic Duties & Responsibilities - Perform major and minor motor repairs and replacement work on school buses, cars, trucks, and other district equipment
- Performance of body repairs, including minor body work, painting, glass, and seat repairs
- Replace valves and seat grinding
- Braze and weld metals as needed
- Install rings and bearings and effects proper adjustments
- Overhauls and repairs carburetors and clutches
- Tune motors using standard testing equipment, clean and replace spark plugs, and install radiator hoses
- Repair transmission, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies
- Take down, repair, and reassemble air compressors, pumps, and related equipment
- Service vehicles with fuel, oil, air, water, and fluids on a rotational basis
- Respond to vehicle breakdown emergencies to include nights and possibly weekends
- Check alignment of wheels
- Maintain shop area, facilities, and tools in a clean, safe condition
- Insure proper disposal of oils, fluids, and tires to meet the requirements of the EPA
- Drive any bus route that may be required as assigned by the Transportation Director
- Utilize computer to diagnosis mechanical and electrical issues on all district buses and vehicles
- Utilize computer or smart phone for record keeping and job assignments
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary by supervisor, thus carrying out all assigned duties efficiently and promptly
Must be able to pass a background check.
