  •   Primary Purpose:
    Assist the special education teacher in providing for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, including, but not limited to, self-help, behavior management and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the Director of Special Education and the assigned building principal and the immediate direction/supervision of a certified teacher. 
     
    Qualifications:
     
                Education/Certification:
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Valid Texas Educational Aide certificate
    • Certification in CPR
      

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

     
    • Successful completion of Paraprofessional Assessment
    • Ability to work with children with disabilities
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instruction
    • Knowledge of general office equipment
    • Ability to communicate effectively
     
    Experience:
    • Prefer minimum of two years’ experience working with children
     
     
    Major Responsibilities and Duties:
               
    • Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy
    • Assist students with physical disabilities according to their individual needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting and/or positioning
    • Assist students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene
    • Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention, including restraining disruptive or dangerous physical behaviors as needed
    • Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative and emotional needs
    • Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher
    • Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus duty and playground
    • Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students
    • Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays
    • Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom
    • Assist in inventory, care and maintenance of equipment
    • Assist the teacher in keeping administrative records and preparing required special education paperwork
    • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
    • Maintain confidentiality
    • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings and special events, as needed
    • Exemplify high standards of ethical conduct as described in member district board policy
    • Work cooperatively with teachers and colleagues
    • Accept suggestions and new ideas
    • Manage time wisely
    • Complete Bus Driver Certification within 3 months of hire date
    • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor(s)
     
    Supervisory Responsibilities:
               
    None
     
    Equipment Used:
     
    Wheelchair lift, ramps, special adaptive equipment, computer, copier and audio-visual equipment.
     
    Working Conditions: school environment
               
    Mental Demands:
    Reading, Math and Writing ability. Ability to communicate effectively. Maintain emotional control under stress.
     
    Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
    Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; regular heavy lifting of students. Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
