    Salary: Step 0, Lane BA: $50,000 minimum, $62,000 minimum for 12 years of experience

     

    Job Summary:

     

    The High School English Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and standards-based instruction in English Language Arts (ELA) to high school students. This includes teaching literature, composition, grammar, and critical thinking skills while fostering a love for reading and writing. The teacher will create a supportive learning environment, assess student progress, and collaborate with colleagues to ensure student success.

     

    Key Responsibilities:

     

    Instruction & Curriculum Development:

     
    • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with Iowa Core Standards.
    • Teach literature, writing, grammar, and communication skills across various grade levels.
    • Incorporate diverse texts and instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
    • Utilize technology and innovative teaching methods to enhance student learning.
    • Differentiate instruction to support students with varying abilities, including those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 Plans.
     

    Student Assessment & Support:

     
    • Evaluate student progress through formative and summative assessments.
    • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students.
    • Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate progress to students and parents.
    • Identify struggling students and implement interventions to support their learning needs.
     

    Classroom Management & Student Engagement:

     
    • Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
    • Implement effective classroom management strategies that promote student responsibility and engagement.
    • Encourage critical thinking, discussion, and collaboration among students.
     

    Collaboration & Professional Development:

     
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues to align curriculum and share best practices.
    • Participate in school committees, staff meetings, and professional learning communities (PLCs).
    • Engage in professional development opportunities to stay current with educational best practices.
    • Communicate effectively with parents, administrators, and other stakeholders regarding student progress and school initiatives.
     

    Additional Responsibilities:

     
    • Supervise students in extracurricular activities, clubs, or school events as needed.
    • Uphold school policies, ethical standards, and professional conduct.
    • Assist with standardized testing, graduation requirements, and student support programs.
     

    Qualifications:

     
    • Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field.
    • Valid Iowa teaching license with an endorsement in English/Language Arts (5-12).
    • Experience teaching high school English preferred.
    • Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
    • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
     

    Work Environment:

     
    • Works primarily in a classroom setting within a high school.
    • May involve occasional evening or weekend commitments for school events or parent meetings.
