Terms: Generally 7.6 hour per day, 187 days per year

Job Description:
The School LPN under the supervision of the School Nurse and the school-based administrator, provides school health services that can be delegated from the nurse to students, staff, families, and school visitors.
The School LPN works in a collaborative relationship with the school nurse. The LPN works as a team member using good judgment according to health services policies and procedures. The school nurse evaluates performance. School LPN uses good judgment and is not expected to use assessment skills that a nurse processes.
The School LPN must adhere to all confidentiality laws under COMAR, HIPAA, and FERPA. Information in the health room is shared on a legitimate need-to-know basis, and violating these laws can lead to serious consequences for the health room assistant. The school nurse should be consulted before sharing any information.
Minimum Qualifications:
- CPR and First Aid
- CNA certification preferred
- CMT certification preferred
- Ability to work cooperatively with others
- Ability to work independently within the guidelines of policy and procedure using
- Discretion and good judgment
- Ability to accept supervisory direction
- Ability to stay calm under adverse circumstances and to calm others under stress
- Ability to relate to children, parents, and educational personnel
- Ability to establish and maintain effective communication, both orally and in writing, with school administrators, central office personnel, faculty, staff, parents, and students
- Ability to communicate competently with tact and listen effectively
- Ability to provide a supportive atmosphere for students and staff while assuring appropriate health room use

The School LPN will:
- Provides first aid and emergency care to students, school staff, and visitors following the regulations and procedures established by the Garrett County Public School System, the Garrett County Health Department, the Maryland State Department of Education, and the Maryland Department of Health.
- Carries out delegated nursing tasks for students and staff
- Follows federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedures related to school health services
- Assists with state-mandated screening programs after training from the school nurse
- Follows laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to control communicable diseases within the school setting
- Carries out health services procedures established by the Garrett County Public School System
- Observes student health, psychosocial and other needs and refer students appropriately
- Maintains accurate, confidential, and appropriate records following established procedures
- The Certified Medication Technician (CMT). CMTs administer medication following established procedures and only under the supervision of a Case Managing/ Delegating Nurse. The School Health Technition will be trained to give emergency medication such as Epinephrine that can be administered in an emergency situation by any trained and unlicensed person.
- Identifies and documents students with health problems and refers students to the school nurse.
- Follows the health care plans that the school nurse develops.
- Communicates necessary medical information promptly to appropriate school personnel, parents/guardians, and the school nurse while maintaining confidentiality
- Maintains emergency procedure information for students and staff.
- Supports health promotion for students, staff, parents, and the community.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
