Job Title: Deafblind Intervener
Reports to: Coordinator of Special Education

Work Year: 186 days
Base Salary: $24,250 *Actual salary will be calculated based on experience.
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Assist special education teacher to provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in special education setting. Provide direct support to a student with deafblindness for all or part of the instructional day as determined by the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
QUAIFICATIONS:
Education/Certifications:
GED or High School Diploma
Associates degree or two years of higher education preferred
Valid certification as interpreter granted by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, or Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, or skill set and ability to obtain within a defined timeframe
Must register with SBEC to obtain an Educational Aide Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of deafblindness preferred
Ability to use various modes of communication such as signing, coactive signing, objects, and/or pictures as documented in the student’s IEP
Ability to work with children with disabilities
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Knowledge of general office equipment
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Provide direct support to a student with deafblindness during all or part of a school day as part of an educational team, and as indicated in the student’s IEP.
Follow the student’s IEP and the modifications and instructional techniques recommended by the student’s instructional and related service staff.
Implement instructional plans provided by the teacher and/or case manager.
Become proficient in student’s individual communication methods and strategies.
Help teacher prepare instructional materials.
Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
Provide assistance to substitute teachers.
Accompany and support the student(s) during community-based instruction.
Help manage behavior of students.
Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special needs.
Work with individual students or small groups.
Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom.
Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
Maintain communications between home and school.
Keep a daily log of information about the student and his or her activities.
Participate in IEP Meetings and student staffings
Participate in the assessment of the student and in the preparation of IEP’s, progress reports, behavior plans, data collection, and other documentation for program monitoring.
Maintain confidentiality.
Participate in staff development training programs and special events as assigned.
Serve as a resource to other staff on issues related to deafblindness.
Fulfill other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Physical demands may include: Assisting with positioning students with physical disabilities. District wide travel. Hours may vary.
Special Education General Employee Expectation:
The Special Education Department maintains an expectation that all staff will assume shared responsibility for the health, safety, and confidentiality of all students and adults; which may include implementing, supporting and documenting behavioral intervention strategies and/or providing school health, related, and personal care services.
