Essex County Public Schools Superintendent Search
The School Board of Essex County (VA) Public Schools invites applications and nominations for the position of Superintendent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The board has established the following qualifications for the next superintendent of Essex County Public Schools:
Establishing and maintaining residency in Essex County within one year is the expectation of the BOARD and a commitment to such will be preferenced amongst otherwise qualified applicants.
Experience as a principal is required.
Experience as an assistant principal, principal, superintendent, associate/assistant superintendent, or central office administrator (or equivalent for any aforementioned) and teaching experience is preferred.
Ability to relate to a small school division and community.
Satisfactory evaluations and demonstrated skills in improving culture, climate, and student achievement.
Minimum Requirements:
Leadership and Management Skills: The successful candidate is a team player who is comfortable with shared decision-making. He or she is a decisive leader, a visionary and a creative thinker. Candidate must have a focus on the following:
Driving data-informed decision-making to improve operational efficiency and student outcomes.
Fostering a culture that values fairness, access, and excellence in all system operations.
Developing and implementing initiatives to address opportunity gaps in academics and post-secondary success and support the diverse needs of all students.
Students should be the number one priority. Applicants should show a love for students through a commitment to the education, well-being, and safety of all students in our community.
Personal Characteristics: The successful candidate is an effective leader who is accessible, caring, consistent; confident, and accountable.
Board-Superintendent Relations: The successful candidate mediates and accommodates different perspectives, understands differences between policy and administration, acts accordingly, and is willing to assume a lead role in decision-making while keeping the Board informed.
Staff Relations: The successful candidate creates an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, maintains transparency and open channels of communication, and sets a good example for staff members.
Community Relations: The successful candidate effectively advocates for the school division’s issues and needs and communicates effectively on private and public levels. He or she responds to individual concerns effectively; and promotes business and community involvement in schools. Adheres to the VA Code, regulations, and best practices for effective collaboration and interconnected work with local and community agencies. Fosters strong partnerships with parents, community organizations, businesses, and local government to support system goals.
School Finance: The successful candidate lobbies for school funding on behalf of the school division, offers creative funding solutions, and develops and explains the rationale for the budget to the Board and local officials. Effectively manage ECPS resources, including a multimillion-dollar budget, facilities, and technology, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with strategic priorities.
Areas of Expertise: The successful candidate must have a willingness to develop and expand expertise in budget and finance, curriculum and instruction, and school reform (e.g. strategic planning, continuous improvement, school safety and security, innovation, technology, etc.)
Candidates must meet the legal requirements to be licensed or be eligible for licensure as a superintendent in Virginia.
