English Language Arts (ELA) Supervisor
REPORTS TO: Director of Curriculum and High School / Middle School Principal
NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:
The English Language Arts Supervisor will provide leadership for the assigned content area(s), consistent with the educational goals and objectives of the district, to carry out planning and development for curriculum, instruction, assessment, program supervision, and the evaluation of instructional staff. The Supervisor will provide oversight for developmentally appropriate programs in the assigned subject area(s) and promote personal growth in teaching environments. Responsible for establishing effective relationships with students, parents/guardians, staff, and community members to enhance learning opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The English Language Arts Supervisor shall:
1. Have a master's degree from an accredited college or university.
2. Hold a New Jersey Certificate of Eligibility or standard administrative certificate as a Principal or Supervisor.
3. Have multi-year, successful continuous experience in teaching English Language Arts.
4. Have the ability to clearly and productively discuss the improvement of the quality of instruction of the department.
5. Hold an Instructional Certification issued by the NJDOE with an English Language Arts K-12
endorsement.
6. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program
evaluation; child growth and development; effective, innovative, and research-based instructional strategies; classroom management; learning assessment and diagnosis; and evidence-based research related to learning.
7. Have experience in staff development and curriculum development review.
8. Demonstrate such alternatives or additional qualifications as the Board may find appropriate, acceptable, and in compliance with New Jersey Law.
JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The English Language Arts Supervisor shall:
1. Assist the principal and Curriculum Office in duties related to instruction, supervision,
evaluation, and the overall administration of the school.
2. Be required to teach two periods of student instruction per day.
3. Supervise, support, and evaluate school personnel.
4. Oversee the ELA curriculum and academic programs.
5. Work closely with teachers to ensure that students are achieving educational targets.
6. Develop and implement strategies to ensure a safe learning environment.
7. Conduct meetings as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.
8. Provide effective advice and support to staff relating to classroom management and
discipline.
9. Teach demonstration lessons in classrooms and serve as a peer coach and support for
staff in reciprocal relationships.
10. Assist the Curriculum Office and principal with the selection and requisition of supplies, textbooks, instructional resources and services, and equipment and conduct inventories, maintain records, and review receipts and purchase orders for such material.
11. Conduct observations and evaluations of teaching staff members, prepare written comments, and offer constructive suggestions for improvement when appropriate.
12. Assist in the supervision of all teachers and paraprofessionals, maintaining clear
expectations for roles, responsibilities, and performance to ensure that all job
responsibilities are met and exceeded.
13. Maintain visibility with students, staff, parents, and the community, attending school and
community functions regularly to demonstrate a genuine interest in the students and staff.
14. Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the central
administration, parents, and representatives of resource agencies within the community.
15. Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of 6 -12 ELA
curriculum and instructional practices.
16. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other constituents to promote effective and
innovative teaching strategies and best practices.
17. Analyze student performance data to identify trends, inform instruction, and support
targeted interventions.
18. Ensure compliance with State and district standards and mandates, including the New
Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts.
19. Assist in development of ELA department budgets and resources effectively.
20. Discuss pre-service and in-service education training in assigned curricular areas with the
teaching department.
21. Communicate information regarding the development, implementation, and evaluation of
curriculum and instructional programs/services.
22. Assist in the assessment of student programs.
23. Discuss units of study with the teaching department.
24. Ensure proper implementation of Board of Education policies and regulations by the teaching staff and paraprofessionals as it pertains to their duties and professional expectations.
25. Discuss the creation and development of special curriculum materials with the teaching
staff.
26. Discuss with the teaching staff an individualized approach to the learning challenges of students served by the department.
27. Research and evaluate new methods and materials for ELA instruction and encourage department members in the use of new, district and/or Board-approved methods and materials.
28. Meet periodically with other departmental leaders to discuss new materials and programs, as applicable to other departments, evaluate present programs, and consider problems of mutual concern.
29. Supervise Department Chairs.
30. Assist with the facilitation of assessments and the analysis of data.
31. Assist with the identification of teachers’ professional development needs.
32. Lead, provide, and participate in ongoing professional development (e.g., meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars), including training related to new instructional initiatives and materials.
33. Facilitate the schedule for instructional coaching sessions, in conjunction with building principals, and plan with the instructional coaches for sessions designed to assist teachers in the implementation of instructional strategies and resources and the use of assessment data in instructional planning.
34. Facilitate discussions of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and review meeting minutes.
35. Meet periodically with administrators to discuss programs and problems of mutual concern.
36. Attend conferences and conventions at the direction of the Director of Curriculum.
37. Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of Curriculum or Superintendent of Schools.
EMPLOYMENT TERMS:
The English Language Arts Supervisor shall be employed under the following terms:
1. Ten months with summer stipend and equivalent of 10-month administrative work schedule and calendar.
2. Must teach two classroom periods or equivalent.
3. Conditions established by laws and codes of the State, and policies, rules, and regulations established by the Board of Education (N.J.S.A. 18A:27-4 et. seq.).
EVALUATION:
The Director of Curriculum or other administrator as assigned by the Superintendent shall evaluate the ELA Supervisor in accordance with this job description and such other criteria as shall be established by the Board of Education.
