Cosmetology Instructor

Primary Purpose:
Provide students with appropriate, hands- on, learning activities and meaningful instruction in the core subject area assigned. Help students fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. 

Job Summary:
The cosmetology instructor reports to the High School Principal. The Cosmetology instructor duties and responsibility include but are not limited to, classroom and lab instruction of cosmetology skills, provide professional leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation or curriculum, and participate in professional development activities. 

Qualifications: 
• Associate or Bachelor's degree from accredited university/college
• 2 year classroom experience 
• 3 year industry experience 
• TDLR license 
Special Knowledge/Skills 
• Must demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds
• Demonstrated ability to conduct and supervise all aspects of the salon operation
• Knowledge of proper use and maintenance of professional cosmetology equipment and supplies
• Knowledge of current Cosmetology industry standards, operations and TDLR requirements
• Proficiency in all areas of hair color, hair relaxers, hair cutting, makeup, facials, waxing, scalp treatments, permanent waving, thermal styling, manicuring, acrylic nails at freshman, intermediate and advanced levels
• Ability to recruit and maintain students in program
• General knowledge of curriculum and instruction 
• Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior 
• Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills 
• Ability to use technology in teaching and learning

Major Responsibilites and Duties: 
• Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required
• Prepare activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration and work time that provide students with opportunities to observe, question and investigate material 
• Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies and administrative regulations
• Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. Lessons and assessments should be reflective of accommodations for differences in students learning styles
• Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curriculum as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP)
• Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives and methods according to district requirements 
• Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process, including but not limited to, computers, audio-visual aids, podcasts and other technology related materials to supplement presentations
• Instruct students in the knowledge and skills required in a specific occupation within the Cosmetology field, using a systematic plan of lectures, discussions, audio-visual presentations, module learning, peer tutoring, laboratory use, shop and field studies, industry related field trips live and virtual, and/or guest speakers
• Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits 
• Provide opportunities to effectively practice basic and advanced skills in Cosmetology field 
• Assist in developing students sense of professionalism necessary for working successfully in the Cosmetology industry
• Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing
• Provide skills, competencies and opportunities for students to take and successfully pass industry certifications 
• Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal 
• Be a positive role model for students
• Create classroom environment conductive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
