Exempt Executive Director of Information Technology General Definition of Work The Executive Director of Information Technology, under minimal supervision, performs senior level work with extensive decision making discretion overseeing the development, implementation, operation, monitoring, and evaluation of the district technology program. This position provides leadership for short and long-range planning for all technology initiatives, vision, goals, program objectives/strategies/activities, infrastructure, staffing, training, evaluation, and budgeting. Employee performs highly advanced and supervisory work to carry out Board of Education policies and procedures related to a wide variety of programs and activities under the direction of the Deputy Superintendent, Academic Services.

Place of Work The normal place of work is on the premises used by Durham Public Schools. Durham Public Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.
Essential Functions - Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
- Lead, manage, supervise, and evaluate assigned programs/staff in the district
- Manage district technology plan and budget
- Design and manage all local area networking, computer installations, standard district software and the technical support of these systems
- Oversee selection and installation of infrastructure to support access to all networks
- Plan, design, and manage all wide area networking, email/internet services and the operational support of these systems
- Direct, monitor, and assess services provided by the Help Desk
- Serve as the system contact for Information Technology communication and coordination
- Ensure district technology and student data platform are both consistent with state mandated criteria and structure along with adherence to the Uniform Reporting System
- Plan and coordinate special activities and presentations to promote technology
- Liaison to state government, vendors, business, and technology industry professionals
- Communicate current and emerging trends of technology applications
Executive Director of Information Technology - Develop and enforce backup/recovery plans for all systems
- Develop and enforce security standards and procedures for all systems
- Prepare, submit, and ensure that expenditures meet proper guidelines for technology related grants and reimbursement programs
- Oversee student data platform in collaboration with administration and staff
- Facilitate staff meetings and attend other related meetings as needed/required
- Complete local, state, or federal surveys and reports accurately and promptly
- Participate in professional development workshops and leadership training
- Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations
- Perform related work as assigned or required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities - Comprehensive knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of public schools
- Comprehensive knowledge of the appropriate uses of technology for instruction and the requirements of the NC Computer Science and Digital Literacy Standards
- Comprehensive knowledge of computer hardware and common software applications
- Comprehensive knowledge of networking hardware and software applications, capabilities and limitations, service requirements and associated costs
- Comprehensive knowledge of communication installations, capabilities and limitations, service requirements and associated costs
- Comprehensive knowledge of cabling infrastructure and electronic components required for networking
- Comprehensive knowledge of the capabilities, limitations and service requirements of mainframe computers and auxiliary equipment
- Thorough knowledge of the school district’s Educational Technology Plan, development methodology and development standards
- Ability to maintain professional and emotional control under stress
- Ability to reflect appropriate response to situations, while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor
- Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
- Ability to develop and monitor a budget

Executive Director of Information Technology - Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work, planning, risk assessments, and associated risk mitigation actions
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment
Education and Experience - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related area required
- Master’s degree in Computer Science preferred
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in K-12 or higher education technology preferred
- Equivalent combination of experience and education
Special Requirements - Possess and maintain a NC Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation
- Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions - Work requires the occasional exertion of up to twenty pounds of force
- Work regularly requires exchange of accurate and detailed information through oral and written communication
- Constantly operates a computer and other office business equipment
- Ability to remain in stationary position for required meetings/work
- Ability to move to other work locations

- Must be on-call as a regular part of the job
