POSITION: Special Education Teacher
LOCATION: Various Locations
JOB SUMMARY:
The Dougherty County School System is seeking an Elementary Special Education teacher to join our roster of experienced, motivated, and effective teaching professionals. The Elementary Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction to students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This role requires collaboration with general education teachers, administrators, parents, and support staff to ensure students receive a high-quality education in the least restrictive environment.
QUALIFICATIONS: - Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, required;
- Clear renewable Georgia certification at the SRT level, required;
- Experience working with students with diverse disabilities, learning needs, and behavioral challenges;
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, parents/guardians, and community partners;
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and empathetically;
- Demonstrates flexibility, patience, and a passion for advocating for and supporting the unique abilities and potential of every student.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: - Develop and implement IEPs tailored to individual student needs, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and district regulations;
- Provide differentiated instruction to students with disabilities in a variety of settings, including inclusion, resource, and self-contained classrooms;
- Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies to support student learning and development;
- Monitor student progress through formal and informal assessments, maintaining accurate records and data for reporting purposes;
- Collaborate with general education teachers to adapt curriculum and instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs;
- Work with parents, guardians, and other stakeholders to promote student success and engagement;
- Implement behavioral interventions and classroom management strategies to support a positive learning environment;
- Participate in IEP meetings, parent conferences, and professional development opportunities;
- Ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and other relevant laws and policies.Assesses students’ academic abilities, strengths, and areas for growth to develop personalized learning goals;
- Collaborates with parents/guardians, school staff, and other professionals to create comprehensive IEPs that address students’ unique needs and challenges;
- Designs and implements instructional strategies, accommodations, and modifications to support students in achieving their IEP goals;
- Creates or adapts instructional resources, such as visual aids, manipulatives, and interactive materials, to support;
- Assists in maintaining a positive and productive classroom environment by enforcing rules and expectations;
- Monitors student behavior and intervenes as necessary to address disruptions;
- Participates in training sessions, workshops, or professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge;
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift and carry teaching materials, books, or small classroom equipment (typically up to 25 lbs);
- Ability to prepare and manipulate learning materials;
- Ability to stand and actively move around the classroom for extended periods;
- Ability to move between classrooms, hallways, and other school areas as needed;
- Ability to respond quickly in case of emergencies, such as evacuating students or assisting during drills;
- Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
REPORTS TO: Principal
SALARY RANGE: 10 Month Contract - Competitive salary and excellent benefits package in accordance with the DCSS Compensation Guide.
