ATHLETIC COACH - HIGH SCHOOL

NATURE OF POSITION: This is a generic coaching description, please call the school or see their website for specific athletics that have coach openings. You may also indicate your athletic areas of interest in your application. The athletic coach is responsible for coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. Position motivates student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport and supervise students under their control in keeping with the school’s Catholic character and Gospel values.

REPORTING FUNCTION: Reports to Principal & Athletic Director

JOB DESCRIPTION:
• Holds organizational meetings for team prospects and encourages potential athletes to participate in the sport.
• Assesses player’s skills and assigns team positions.
• Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development.
• Works with the athletics director in scheduling facilities for practices and competition.
• Assigns duties to an assistant coach as necessary.
• Coaches and instructs players, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
• Observes players, during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
• Determines game strategy based on the team’s capabilities.
• Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times.
• Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met; and encourages student athletes to maintain a high academic standard.
• Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
• Conferences with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their student.
• Follows state, regional, district, and school regulations governing the athletic program.
• Models sportsman-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
• Acts as a team representative and promotes the sport by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations.
• Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
• Works with the athletic director to develop a policy for awards and submits a list of award winners at the end of the season.
• Participates in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
• Maintains eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment inventory, and other related records.
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
• Encourages student athletes in developing their faith, and in upholding Christian values.
• Complies with state and diocesan policies and fulfills all  training requirements
• Attends staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
• Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal & Athletic Director or other appropriate administrator.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:
1. Teacher/Coach: Pennsylvania and Diocesan credential authorizing secondary teaching.
2. Coach: Sufficient education to meet knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
• A high school coach has to be familiar with the rules and regulations of the sports they plan on coaching. This is acquired through playing and studying the sport. There are no specific education requirements for a high school, but many possess a bachelor's degree in sports science, exercise, kinesiology, fitness, physical education or physiology.
• A coach has to be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and partake in any necessary training or education programs required by the state.
• A high school coach must possess leadership skills and be able to set an example for the players.
• Must have excellent communication skills allowing them to inspire players and work with them on improvement.
• Meets all diocesan employment requirements

The employee must be able to demonstrate athletic movement and sports skills and participate in sports activities with moderate to extensive levels of physical stress.  Depending on the sport the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific abilities required by this job include distance vision, and peripheral vision, the ability to hear conversations in quiet and noisy environments, and the ability to speak clearly in order to exchange information. The employee will frequently interact with the public and other staff and occasionally work extended hours. Some driving is necessary.

Basic Job Description: Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' business academics (e.g. reading, math, writing, etc.) and business skills (e.g. word processing, typing, bookkeeping, record keeping, office procedures, business communications, etc.), as well as an understanding of our American business system and its place in the nation's and world's economy; to provide knowledge needed for intelligent consumption of business services; to develop practical business skills for personal use or for use in business occupations; and to encourage students to develop work and personal habits essential for success in business. 
 
Reports to:     Principal  

Essential Functions
 
• Develops and administers business education curriculum consistent with Diocesan school  goals and objectives.
• Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
• Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
• Teaches knowledge and skills in the following subjects to secondary students: typing, note-taking, bookkeeping, record-keeping, office procedures, business communications, data processing or basic business principles.
• Provides instruction on the use and development of skills in the use of office equipment, technology (including the use of computer network systems and applications, and business techniques such as those used in merchandising.
• Prepares appropriate instructional aids and display materials to enhance learning.
• Instructs students in use, care, and safe operation of business equipment.
• Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
• Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research, and by maintaining professional relationships with members of the business community.
• Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
• Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
• Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
• Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
• Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.

Knowledge, Experience, Educations required for: Secondary School teacher
 
1. Create an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
2. Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
3. Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
4. Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
5. Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
6. Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
7. Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
8. Assign and grade class work and homework.
9. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment
10. Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments in order to evaluate students' progress.
11. Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.
12. Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, diocesan policies, and administrative regulations.
13. Guide and counsel students with adjustment and/or academic problems, or special academic interests.
14. Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of the school, state, and diocese.
15. Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
16. Identify students' needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning and health problems.

25. Administer standardized ability and achievement tests, and interpret results to determine student strengths and areas of need.
26. Perform administrative duties such as assisting in school libraries, hall and cafeteria monitoring, and bus loading and unloading.
27. Select, store, order, issue, and inventory classroom equipment, materials, and supplies.
28. Sponsor extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.
29. Prepare and supervise students for Mass.
