    POSITION SUMMARY

     
    In this Decatur Park District position, the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will report to the Golf Course Superintendent and the Director of Golf and maintain the optimal playing condition of all golf course turf and grounds. 
     
    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
     
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Maintains and performs minor repair and programming on the automatic irrigation system and computerized controls
    • Supervises golf club maintenance personnel as directed and trains seasonal personnel
    • Maintains maintenance, fertilizer, and chemical records
    • Operates power mowing and cultivation equipment in trimming and renovating golf course greens, aprons and tees
    • Repairs and replaces pipe on sprinkler system at park locations
    • Operates dump truck and other light equipment.
    • Works in repair and laying out of cart paths, construction projects, and drainage systems
    • Waters, fertilizes and sprays tees, greens and fairways with fungicides and herbicides
    • Grades and prepares base, lays sod, and seeds tees, greens and fairways
    • Maintains weather and chemical application records and diagnoses pest problems
    • Submits reports on purchasing, payroll, material, fuel usage, water records, and equipment inventory
    • Attends work on a regular basis
    • Performs the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work and safety rules, and the employee handbook
    • Maintains a clean and organized work environment
    • Other duties may be assigned.
     
    MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
    • Changes pins and tee markers
    • Rakes and maintains sand traps
    • Renovates reel and rotary mowers
    • Trims trees and prunes shrubbery and flowers
     
    • Assists golf course maintenance staff on shop projects, as needed
    • Provides orientation and training to staff
    • Maintains required departmental records
    • Attends professional conferences and workshops to promote knowledge in related areas of responsibility and for continuing education
     
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
    Supervises all non-exempt full-time, part-time and seasonal golf maintenance staff.
               
    PERFORMANCE STANDARDS/JOB EXPECTATIONS
     
    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
    • BA/BS in Turf Management, Horticulture Management or closely related field from an accredited college or university is preferred but not required
    • Minimum of three (3) to four (4) years of demonstrated success in golf course or landscaping maintenance
    • Or, any equivalent combination of education, experience and training
    • Valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s License with air brake qualifier, or the ability to obtain such within 3 months of hire date
    • Valid Illinois Driver’s License
    • Valid Illinois Pesticide Public Applicator License in turf, pest and ornamental control and right of way, or the ability to obtain such within 3 months of hire date
    • CPR and First Aid Certifications preferred
     
    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
    • Strong knowledge of and the ability to construct and maintain greens, tees and fairways to an acceptable standard of golf play
    • Strong knowledge of seeding and maintaining turf on golf courses
    • Strong knowledge of planting, cultivating, pruning and caring for plants, shrubs and trees
    • Strong knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of fertilizers and soil conditioners
    • Good knowledge of herbicide and pest control methods and materials
    • Basic knowledge of irrigation watering systems
    • Thorough knowledge of the construction and maintenance of golf course tees, fairways, greens and golf cart paths
    • Good knowledge of the game of golf
    • Ability to cooperate with and interpret Park District philosophies in relation to governmental, public and private groups and agencies and to the general public
    • Strong knowledge of pertinent safety precautions
    • Ability to hire, supervise, train and evaluate the work of skilled and semi-skilled employees
    • Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with other supervisors and subordinate employees
    • Ability to work harmoniously with fellow employees, patrons, community groups and other units of local government.
    • Ability to work independently in day-to-day operations with general direction of the Superintendent of Golf Course Maintenance and the Director of Golf
    • Capacity to utilize effective time management skills and be able to work under the stress of multiple deadlines, requests from other departments and interruptions with accuracy
    • Ability to work in a team atmosphere, promoting positive work relationships with both internal and external customers
    • Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities to perform required work
    • Ability to communicate effectively with fellow staff and the public both orally and in writing
    • Capacity to be self-motivated and achieve goals with minimal supervision or direction
    • Ability to maintain self-control and composure in difficult situations
    • Capacity to utilize computer skills, including demonstrated proficiencies in word processing and basic spreadsheet and database applications
    • Capacity to proactively troubleshoot, problem solve and make sound judgments with respect to confidentiality
     
    HOURS
    • Monday through Sunday, minimum of 40 hours a week, with work hours designated by the Superintendent of Golf Course Maintenance
    • Night, weekend and holiday scheduling may be required
    • Employee is considered to be on duty whenever the need exists
    • Occasional evening and weekend hours and being on call is required as needed

    • General work area is out of doors and employee is exposed to extreme weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, rain and ice
    • Employee will also be exposed to chemicals (i.e., fertilizer, pesticides, weed killers, fungicides)
     
    • Exposure to noise distractions from employees or equipment operation in adjacent work areas
    • Infrequent exposure to cleaning materials and office supplies (e.g., copier toner)
     
    • Exposure to chronic infectious disease while performing routine first aid or emergency procedures
    • Protective clothing and equipment is required as it pertains to the particular job duty:
     
    • Earplugs or ear covers
    • Safety goggles, glasses or face shield
    • Spraying respirator
    • Protective gloves
    • Rubber boots or leather-type steel tip work boots, OSHA approved
    • Hard hat
    • Protective suit or outerwear
