DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL SAFETY AND SECURITY
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB:
The Director of School Safety and Security is responsible for a variety of supervisory and administrative tasks directing Safety and Security activities within Dutchess BOCES and its 13 component school districts. The Director of Safety and Security is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of safety and security policies, programs, and procedures across all BOCES campuses and facilities. The Director works to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors by collaborating with law enforcement agencies, overseeing emergency response plans, and ensuring compliance with New York State safety regulations. This position is also responsible for assessing countywide needs, setting specific goals, developing component district programs and services, and evaluating the effectiveness of implemented programs. The Director assists with identifying existing internal and external opportunities, and assists the agency with developing strategic Safety and Security plans.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
• Full-time, 12-month, tenure track, Agency-level administrative assignment.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:
• NYS Certification as a School District Administrator (SDA), School District Leader (SDL), or School Administration & Supervision (SAS).
• Three to Five years of experience as a building or district administrator strongly preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in school safety or emergency management, preferably in a K-12 or educational setting.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Thorough understanding of New York State Education Department (NYSED) school safety requirements.
• Knowledge of state and federal laws related to school security and student safety.
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage crises effectively and remain calm under pressure.
• Proficiency in security technologies, such as surveillance systems and emergency alert software.
• New York State School Violence Prevention and Intervention Certification (or willingness to obtain).
• FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) certification (or willingness to obtain).
• CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Safety and Security Planning
• Work collaboratively with the Principals and agency- wide safety committee to maintain the BOCES Agency-Wide Safety Plan and building-level Emergency Response Plans in accordance with New York State Education Department (NYSED) guidelines.
• Develop and support safety and security services/co-sers for Dutchess BOCES component school districts.
• Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and security inspections of facilities.
• Implement and monitor security systems, including surveillance cameras, visitor management systems, and emergency notification systems.
• Lead and coordinate safety drills, including fire drills, lockdowns, and evacuations, ensuring compliance with NYSED and local regulations.
Crisis Management and Emergency Response
• Serve as the primary point of contact for emergency situations and coordinate responses with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency management agencies.
• Develop and implement crisis intervention and de-escalation protocols.
• Establish and lead the agency-wide Safety Committee, conducting regular meetings to review safety protocols and incidents.
Training and Staff Development (Internal and External)
• Provide safety and security training to administrators, faculty, and staff on topics such as emergency response, active shooter scenarios, and conflict resolution.
• Develop and deliver safety orientation programs for new employees.
• Conduct tabletop exercises and simulations with staff and local first responders.
Collaboration and Compliance
• Act as the BOCES liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
• Manage safety-related records and prepare reports for the Board of Trustees and regulatory agencies.
• Act as resource to component school districts, providing opportunities for collaboration and support.
Personnel Management and Budgeting
• Supervise security personnel, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
• Develop and manage the security and safety department budget.
• Procure and oversee contracts for security technology and services.
Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as directed
