The ultimate objective of this position is to provide equitable access to high-quality education by ensuring that the core curriculum and general education experience are both accessible and meaningful for all English learners.
The ESL Specialist will possess expertise in best-practice instructional and assessment methodologies for teaching and evaluating listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English as a second or third language. This role requires the ability to support students and collaborate with staff through various models of differentiated language instruction.
Additionally, the ESL Specialist plays a vital role in screening, orientation, and transition services for English learners (ELs), both students new to the U.S. and students with limited English proficiency. The specialist will also demonstrate the skills necessary to provide pedagogical content coaching to colleagues.
Following qualifications are preferred for the ideal candidate: - Valid Professional Educator License from the Illinois State Board of Education
- Must hold an ESL endorsement/approval that aligns with the grade level of the Professional Educator License
- Requires a minimum of 3 years teaching experience in an EL classroom
- Preferred, but not required – Bilingual endorsement/approval or fluency in a second language, in addition to English
- Preferred, but not required – Coaching experience, additional preparation and professional learning on ESL instruction
- Experience living or traveling abroad is a plus
