POSITION SUMMARY:
The Health Office Nurse ensures smooth and efficient operation of the school's health office and sets daily priorities based on knowledge of the overall function of the office and performs work as required or assigned. Additionally, the job of Health Office Nurse is done for the purpose(s) of providing support to assigned personnel; communicating information to the staff, the public, and other districts; ensuring compliance with legal and administrative requirements; and providing information and/or direction as may be requested.
QUALIFICATION - EXPERIENCE - KNOWLEDGE:
Valid Illinois Registered Professional Nurse License
Current CPR and AED certification
Illinois Certification as a Vision and Hearing Screening technician
Experience in school nursing, high school level preferred
Credentialed to complete IEP Medical Reviews
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student and staff information for the purpose of ensuring compliance with district, state, and federal regulations
Plans, provides, and sustains safe and effective nursing services as defined by the Illinois Nursing Act
Maintains accurate school health records in accordance with the Illinois School Student Records Act
Identifies and follows-up on student related health problems and possible cases of abuse and neglect
Assesses the health status of students and provide health counseling when appropriate to students, parents and staff
Supervise and/or administer medications in compliance with administrative guidance and or regulatory requirements
Maintain accurate medical records for all students, including immunization and physical forms.
Compiles and submits reports as mandated by local, state, and federal government in compliance with administrative guidance and or regulatory requirements
Acts as liaison between school, home, community health agencies and the medical sector
Collects and analyzes health related data
Performs and records Health and safety assessments
Administers Vision/Hearing screenings as mandated by the State of Illinois-IDHC certified
Maintains daily nurse logs in Infinite Campus
Provides medical and emotional assessments to students and staff, assists special needs students with daily care as directed by 504’s, IEPs, and medical care plans, etc.
Provides Special/General Education medical reviews related to EAP’s, IHP’s, IEP’s and 504 Plans
Works collaboratively with student services, administrators, teachers, parents/guardians and students to meet health and safety needs of students
Serves on concussion oversight team and allergy oversight team
Provides staff training regarding emergency medical situations
Maintains AEDs, Narcan, and undesignated Epinephrine in the building
Develops and maintains policies and protocols for Infectious Disease Management including testing
Works collaboratively with local health departments with routine and specific infectious disease processes and tracing
Tests, tracks, educates, and reports symptomatic students in compliance with district, state, and federal regulations Test symptomatic students and staff and reporting, as required by the State of Illinois
Communicates with students, staff, and families to discuss symptoms, provide education, discuss return to information, addresses concerns, and assists with coordinating medical care as needed
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Informs other staff and/or outside parties regarding procedural requirements for the purpose of providing safe and effective nursing services
Attends department, in-service meetings, workshops and/or seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions
Participates in training for the purpose of providing or receiving information and updating skills as changes occur in district software
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective
functioning of the school district
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Ability to demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality
Ability to perform several tasks concurrently under varying deadlines and adapt to changing work priorities
Ability to maintain a professional demeanor in all situations and must be able to withhold confidential information
Ability to exercise tact, good judgment, and initiative in dealing with employees, administrators, and other outside institutions
Ability to operate standard office equipment including using pertinent job related software applications and preparing and maintaining accurate records
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing including clear, polite telephone communication skills and the use of proper grammar and punctuation to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with frequent interruptions
Ability to set work priorities, and work efficiently under minimum supervision
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees in this position must have the ability to sit for extended periods of time; enter data into a computer; operate standard office equipment; use a telephone; see and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids, hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; speak so that others may understand at normal levels and on the telephone.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands; some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling and significant finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 70% sitting, 15% walking, and 15% standing.
There will be an annual evaluation for this position.
