TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Maintains an up-to-date, in-field certificate with required ESOL certification and/or endorsement issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission; salary and length of contract to be established by the Board of Education.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: To plan for and to provide appropriate learning experiences and educational opportunities for identified ESOL students assigned to caseload using the WIDA Framework guidelines, appropriate Georgia Standards, the principles of language acquisition, and through the use of state approved delivery models. A primary focus of this work is aimed at implementing culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racism, cultural humility, equity, and the elimination of disproportionality in areas such as student achievement, discipline, and participation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned. • Teaching and Classroom Duties and Responsibilities - Demonstrates proficient knowledge of the WIDA Framework and GA Standards of Excellence for appropriate content strands.
- Identifies pupil needs and develops strategies for small groups and/or individual education plans.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides whole group, small group, and individualized instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Plans and implements developmentally appropriate interactive learning experiences.
- Communicates regularly with parents outside normal classroom day by means of class newsletters, notes, telephone calls, conferences, emails, websites, etc.
- Utilizes technology effectively to plan, teach, and assess.
- Evaluates, selects, and modifies resources and activities to match learners’ needs and meet the curriculum standards.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
- Monitors students’ progress in learning through a variety of techniques. o Participates in the MTSS process, including all MTSS meetings for all identified ESOL students.
- Prepares adequately for responsibilities to be assumed when absent.
- Participates in daily duties and responsibilities within the assigned school.
- Avoids behaviors which detract from the staff morale.
- Parent Engagement Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans for and delivers parent and family engagement workshops specifically targeted and designed for ESOL and Title III parents.
- Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day including PTA events and family engagement events.
- Provides support to parents and the local school for fostering school – home communication regarding ESOL program and other school and district communications provided in a language that parents can understand
- Professional Learning and Development Responsibilities
- Maintains annual WIDA Screener and ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 certifications each year.
- Participates in professional learning to increase skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities and serves on committee’s when needed.
- Remains up to date on current trends and research in the field as it relates to EL achievement and local, state, and federal guidance on ESOL and immigrant students.
- Assists in providing training at local school for the support in ESOL strategies and models of instruction and assessment for English Learner achievement.
- Attend district ESOL department meetings and participate in all required ESOL related professional learning.
- ESOL Programmatic Responsibilities, Monitoring, and Compliance
- Prepare and submit ESOL service schedule for assigned schools for approval by ESOL Coordinator/Director.
- Maintain accurate student records concerning ESOL eligibility, parent notifications, and testing accommodations using the district student information system and other require documentation protocols.
- Provide teaching strategies and recommendations for accommodations in both instruction and assessment to differentiate for all levels of language proficiency.
- Adhere to state and federal guidelines for the ESOL program, maintaining and distributing documents, and work under required time constraints. o Follow professional practices consistent with school and district practices when working with students, students’ records, parents, and colleagues.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the ESOL Coordinator/Director.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises classroom, students, paraprofessional (if applicable), and volunteers

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Required Education and/or Experience - Clear Renewable Valid Georgia Educator Certification in appropriate teaching/content area certification
- Must hold ESOL certification or ESOL endorsement
- Experience working with racially and economically diverse student population(s)
- Proficient level experience working with a student information system
- Excellent verbal, written communication, and organization skills
Preferred Education and/or Experience - 2 years’ previous experience as an ESOL teacher
- Master’s degree in education
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
For itinerant ESOL positions, teacher must have reliable transportation for travel between schools.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job shall be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
To perform the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, or hear. Lifting up to 30 pounds may be required on an occasional basis.
