Job Title: Classroom Teacher
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree
Illinois licensure and completion of diocesan regulations
Reports to: Principal
Supervisor of: Students, teacher aides, adult volunteers
Job Goals:
1. To assist in developing the Christian attitudes and behavior of students through planning and implementation of Catholic values and virtues.
To support school philosophy, goals, objectives, and guidelines as expressed in the faculty handbook.
To create programs and a classroom environment conducive to spiritual and moral development, learning, and personal growth.
To motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge in accordance with each pupil’s ability.
To incorporate technology into appropriate course work.
To establish effective relationships with staff, students, and parents.
To be present and available at required times before and after school.
To collaborate in shared responsibilities.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. General Function – Faith Facilitator
The classroom teacher will witness to the message of Christ as revealed in His Person, His sacraments, Sacred Scripture, the Church community, Catholic doctrine, and the traditional heritage of the Church.
Specific Tasks
The teacher will:
Bring the message of Christ to the students through instruction and Christian witness.
Integrate faith and culture, faith and life.
Prepare and present all instruction in accord with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Integrate principles of peace and justice into all areas of the curriculum.
Pray with the faculty and school faith community.
Participate in and prepare students for liturgical and prayer experiences.
2. General Function – Instructional Leader
The classroom teacher will strive to develop within students the essential life learning tools of communication, problem solving, decision making, creativity, and comprehension that will prepare the child for living in today’s world.
Specific Tasks
The teacher will:
Implement the school’s philosophy, relating it to the teaching and learning experience.
Involve students in establishing, maintaining, and evaluating classroom rules and goals.
Show knowledge of child psychology and the principles of learning.
Provide for individual differences.
Use a variety of teaching strategies for the purposes of the lesson.
Demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter.
Make daily lesson plans and long-range plans.
Provide for pupil activity.
Integrate predetermined goals.
Use problem-solving techniques.
Encourage self-directed learning.
Give students clear objectives and concise directions.
Maintain discipline according to school guidelines.
Integrate computer technology into the instructional program.
Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis.
Provide student progress reports and grades as directed by the school.
Maintain accurate and complete records as required by diocesan regulations.
Seek the assistance of specialists as required to meet special needs.
Take all the necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
Plan purposeful assignments for teacher aides and classroom volunteers.
Supervise and evaluate the performance of teacher aides and classroom volunteers.
3. General Function – Life Learner
The classroom teacher will strive to be a catalyst for change who sees possibilities for growth in all aspects of life.
Specific Tasks
The teacher will:
Participate in staff development and in-service programs.
Keep abreast of current trends, developments, and research as they pertain to education.
Take part in professional and religious activities provided by the school and/or diocese.
With the principal, evaluate professional development status in accord with local policy.
4. General Function – Team Member
The classroom teacher will exemplify the desire and willingness to share talents, time, and energy in building up the school faith community and its professional standards and curriculum.
Specific Tasks
The teacher will:
Find ways to implement the service aspect of the school’s faith community.
Volunteer help when needed.
Appreciate and encourage the giftedness in self and others.
Support diocesan and parish school organizations.
Collaborate with the principal/school administration in implementing policy.
Collaborate with faculty/staff in formulating curriculum goals and objectives.
Work with total staff in establishing and maintaining continuity in discipline.
Share responsibilities for liturgy, committees, and extracurricular activities.
Share responsibility for overall order in the school and the supervision of students.
Be present by the door when classes switch to receive students from the hallway.
Arrive at the school by the time prescribed in the faculty handbook.
Remain in the building following dismissal until the time prescribed in faculty handbook.
5. General Function – Bridge Builder
The classroom teacher will strive to unify past situations, present experiences, and future thrusts in strengthening the practice of the school philosophy and goals as they touch faculty, staff, clergy, students, and parents. The teacher will strive to recognize, enhance, and encourage each person.
Specific Tasks
The teacher will:
Communicate with administration, co-teachers, students, and parents.
Help students to work together cooperatively.
Develop plans and use opportunities for peacemaking and conflict resolution.
Give support to the weak and underprivileged.
Demonstrate mercy, compassion, and justice.
Foster group cohesiveness among students in the classroom.
Respect the uniqueness of each person in his/her strengths and weaknesses.
Share in the pain and joy of families, students, and staff.
Be available to the members of the school community when needed.
Build positive, hopeful attitudes and witness with caring actions and words.
Provide opportunities for celebration of God’s gifts.

Salary is $32,500 - $55,000 depending on experience
