    Substitute Teacher (Grades Pre-K-12)

    Position Purpose

     

    Substitutes provide face-to-face instruction with students in school buildings (and virtually when the district is operating using the virtual instruction model) and ensure continuity of appropriate learning during the absence of permanent educators. Substitute Teachers perform related duties in lieu of the absent educator, or in a class that does not have an assigned educator. Substitutes must be adaptable to changing school and district needs and able to create and maintain a climate that promotes respect, tolerance, and peaceful problem solving for all students.  This position is on-call and is assigned based on operational needs. 

     


    Performance Responsibilities:

     
    • Reports in person to the school building to provide face-to-face instruction to students
    • Able to provide instruction simultaneously to in-person and remote learners, if necessary
    • Responsive to changing school and district instructional needs
    • Provides classroom instruction to students as outlined in lesson plans
    • Creates a classroom that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students
    • Maintains a safe and orderly environment
    • Maintains established routine of the school and classroom procedures in which assigned
    • Maintains a professional appearance
    • Remains at school the entire school day, unless otherwise instructed to leave by building principal
    • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
    • Maintains reasonable rules of conduct which encourage self-discipline and responsibility
    • Communicates effectively with parents as needed
    • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and times designated
    • Monitors students in the classroom, at lunch and throughout the school by maintaining order and discipline
    • Perform duties, as assigned, with awareness of Atlanta Public Schools Board policies

    Qualifications:

    The minimum requirements to be considered for Substitute Teaching positions are as follows:

     
    • HS Diploma/GED 
    • Pass a GBI Criminal Background Check (required to attend onboarding)
    • Valid or expired Georgia Teacher or Paraprofessional Certificate OR STEDI Substitute Diploma
    • Must relate well to students and inspire the love of learning
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Ability to comprehend and follow directives
    • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
    • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
    • Acceptance and completion of three (3) substitute assignments for face-to-face instruction within the school building with students present, each month
     

    **Substitutes must maintain a Clearance Certificate, issued by the GA Professional Standards Commssion.     Application Procedure and Hire Process:

    1.  Complete the online application, being sure to attach a digital copy of the following documents:

     
    • Resume
    • Transcripts from an accredited educational institution confirming completion of your highest level of education
    • Valid (or expired) Georgia Teacher's or Paraprofessional Certificate
      • If you have not earned either, you will be required to earn the STEDI Substitute Diploma, accessible at https://mylearning.stedi.org/product/subskills-online-training-course-2/.  
    • Either a valid (or expired) Georgia Clearance Certificate or GACE Educator Ethics completion certificate
     

    2. To be considered complete, applications must meet the following requirements:

     
    • Answered professional references (The status of your reference forms can be viewed in the "Reference" portion of your application.)
    • The attachments listed above, and
    • Either a valid (or expired) Georgia Clearance Certificate or GACE Educator Ethics completion on file with the Georgia Professional Standards Comission.
     

    3. Applicants being considered for employment will then be instructed, via email, to complete the Criminal Background Check. 

     

    4. Applicants who clear the background check will be notified, via email, with next steps. 

     

    5. After background clearance, candidates for employment will be invited to attend Substitute Onboarding, via email.
