Job Summary
The Director of Indigenous Education implements and maintains cultural, educational, and social supports for Alaska Native and Native American students in accordance with Anchorage School District goals and guardrails as well as state and federal regulations. This position is responsible for the management and administration of the Indigenous Education Program including the Title VI Indian Education grant and other discretionary grants. The director collaborates with tribes, tribal organizations, school-based and department staff, district administration, families, and the Native Advisory Committee to establish and maintain a program that improves education outcomes for Alaska Native and Native American students. The director is based at the ASD Education Center and reports to the senior director of Mental Health and Student Support. This position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).
 
Job Requirements
The following are required:
1. A master’s degree or higher with a major in education, tribal administration and/or governance, or a related field such as Alaska studies, social work, public administration, human services, etc.
2. A minimum of three years of experience as an administrator in a school district or tribal organization.
 
The following are preferred:
1. Experience in a culturally diverse school district or organization.
2. Experience working with tribal entities.
3. Experience working with Alaska Native and Native American students and families.
4. Experience managing grants and budgets.
5. Experience supervising and evaluating staff.
6. Knowledge of program development, project management, professional learning, research, and program evaluation.
 
Essential Job Functions
1. Provides leadership in guiding the direction of the Indigenous Education Program in alignment with district goals and guardrails.
2. Oversees the Title VI Indian Education grant development, budgets, activities, compliance, and program evaluation in alignment with state and federal guidelines.
3. Builds relationships and partnerships with tribes and tribal organizations.
4. Supports the Native Advisory Committee.
5. Provides guidance on culturally supportive practices to inform program goals and activities which will lead to positive educational outcomes for Alaska Native and American Indian students.
6. Hires, supervises, and evaluates department staff and assists principals in the hiring of school-based staff.
7. Cultivates a positive climate and develops high performing teams within the department.
8. Provides guidance and support for high quality professional learning for department and school-based staff.
9. Works with principals and district administrators on program implementation to best meet the needs of Alaska Native and American Indian students.
10. Monitors and analyzes data and prepares reports as required for district administration, the Anchorage School Board, the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, and the federal government.
11. Communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders both verbally and in writing.
12. Establishes and maintains productive working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including state and federal administrators.
13. Performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
 
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Job Summary
The Teacher Expert, High School Counseling assists in providing a comprehensive counseling program that is responsive to student needs while also addressing the goals and objectives of the Anchorage School District. This position stays abreast of best practices in counseling and encourages staff to apply these principles and practices that enable students to be actively engaged in the learning process. The counseling teacher expert provides support to counselors and schools through recommending, demonstrating, and modeling appropriate materials, technology, and other resources that meet the learning needs of all students. This position reports to and is evaluated by the Director of Student Support.

This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.
