Job Summary
The Special Education Resource Secondary Paraprofessional Educator implements special education services and supports under the direction of a special education teacher. The teacher assistant will provide instruction and assistance to special education students in special education classrooms, regular education classrooms, and other settings in the schools. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).
 
Job Requirements
The following required:
1. A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
2. Must meet paraprofessional requirements for the state of Alaska through one of the following methods: 48 college semester credits from a regionally accredited institution, OR a passing score of 459 or greater on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment exam, OR passing the WorkKeys by ACT assessment, OR passing the ASD provided Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
3. Basic literacy skills in reading, writing, and math.
4. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
5. Ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation of staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
6. Ability to establish and maintain a professional relationship with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
 
The following are preferred:
1. Knowledge of first aid.
2. One year experience working in general education, special education, agency settings, or private school settings.
3. Experience working directly with individuals experiencing disabilities.
4. Ability to read and interpret documents such as Individual Education Plans, behavior plans, and lesson plans, etc. under the direction of the special education teacher.
5. Ability to remain calm and maintain a professional demeanor during times of conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.
6. Ability to share essential information appropriately with team members to aid in the development of individual student programs.
7. Ability to support students in the academic areas of pre-algebra or algebra.
8. Basic experience with office equipment and computer literacy skills including word processing, printing, and e-mail.
           
Essential Job Functions
1. Provides instructional services in reading, math, writing, etc. to students individually or in small groups under the supervision of a special education teacher.
2. Prepares or modifies instructional materials for students as specified by special education teacher.
3. Collects data in accordance with student(s) IEP goals and objectives as directed by certified special education staff.
4. Collaborates and works cooperatively, as a team member, with colleagues and staff.
5. Follows written and oral instructions, and independently follows through on teacher directed programming/strategies.
6. Implements and provides special education services and supports for students as detailed in the IEP. Duties will include providing instructional services, accommodations or modifications, behavioral and social interventions, individual behavior improvement plans, personal hygiene assistance, and assistance to and from the buses.
7. Supports vocational programs and community involvement in accordance with student(s) IEP as directed by a special education teacher.
8. Provides instructional support in the area of study skills and organization both in the regular education and special education classes as directed by a special education teacher.
9. Provides primary support in special education or regular education classroom environments. Provides additional student support in other school setting as per individual student need. This may include providing assistance/monitoring during lunch periods, breaks, and/or before and after school as specified in the IEP.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

The successful candidate will receive an additional 3% increase on their annual salary.

Job Summary
Special Education teachers plan and provide learning experiences for students with disabilities, including cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities, in a variety of educational settings. Special Education Teachers create a flexible program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction; establishes effective rapport with students; may modify general education curriculum to meet students’ needs with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports; and establishes good relationships with parents and with other staff members. The Special Education Teacher reports to and is evaluated by the site principal.
 
This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. This position’s grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent upon student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.


Job Requirements
The following are required:
1. A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education.
2. Evidence of content knowledge shown by:
   1. a posted degree in the content area of this position; or
   2. a posted minor in the content area of this position; or
   3. passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores (formerly Praxis II) in the content area of this position; or
   4. an endorsement in the content area of this position.
3. Educators teaching in a Kindergarten through 3^rd grade class must meet requirements for the Alaska Reads Act.

The following are preferred:
1. Evidence of experience working with special education students.
2. Experience working collaboratively to support the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs of special education students in a public school setting.
