    This position is Paygrade 6

    Reports to: Campus Principal and Director of Bands

    Primary Purpose:
    Coordinate the preparations, exercises, and activities of the school marching band’s auxiliary unit, the Color Guard. The instructor prepares and directs the unit for independent performance and competition, as well as for performances integrated within the larger marching band.

    Qualifications:
    Education/Certification:
    High School Diploma
    Background in marching band auxiliary performance
    Experience in the skills needed by color guard unit (use of flags, props, equipment, dance, etc.)
    Experience in composing and choreographing routines
    Experience working with school-aged students--preferably at high school level.
    Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

    Major Responsibilities and Duties:
    1. Attend rehearsals, performances, competitions and other group activities.
    2. Jointly participate in new student try-outs;
    3. Prepares warm-up routines/practice exercises for the unit.
    4. Choreographs, arranges, and implements color guard routine(s), both as an integrated part of the marching band, and as an independent unit.
    5. Evaluate members' abilities and designs equipment carriage accordingly.
    6. Work closely/effectively with the band staff to develop a visual program, including flag, uniform, and prop design.
    7. Instruct members in fundamental and advanced dance, flag, and related techniques.
    8. Oversee and coordinate the program’s participation in the North Texas Colorguard Association (NTCA) and WGI (Winterguard International) circuits.
    9. Coordinate the color guard rehearsal schedule with the full band schedule.
    10. Create rehearsal plans in cooperation with Marching Band Director.
    11. Ensure the highest possible level of performance from the color guard members thorough a proper warm-up process, effective preparation, and attention to individual members.
    12. Recruit potential color guard members while retaining current members.
    13. Ensure that the color guard is properly equipped for all activities.
    14. Manage all equipment necessary for rehearsals and performances including maintenance, repair, and acquisition recommendations.
    15. Participate in spring semester program planning as needed.
    16. Under guidance of band director, establish communication with parents of color guard students and organize their efforts in support of the unit.
    17. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the assigned area.
    18. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
    19. Apply and enforce student discipline and sportsmanship in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
    20. Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips.
    21. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
    22. Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
    23. Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
    24. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignments.
    25. Work/fulfill a flexible, varied schedule which includes regular reporting as well as night and weekend activities at various times of the year.
    26. Maintain a cooperative working relationship with staff members.
    27. Maintain confidentiality.
    28. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:
    None.

    Working Conditions:
    Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; automated external defibrillator (AED)
    Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
    Motion: Frequent walking/marching
    Lifting: Regular moderate lifting and carrying (15–44 pounds); may lift and move band instruments and equipment
    Environment: Work outside and inside; exposure to extreme temperatures (hot, cold, and inclement weather), humidity, and prolonged sunlight; work on uneven or slippery surfaces; frequent exposure to noise
    Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district and statewide travel
