School Librarian
Summary The High School Librarian plays a vital role in fostering a culture of literacy, research, and digital citizenship among students and staff. This individual is responsible for managing the school library, developing and maintaining its collection, supporting curriculum needs, and promoting a love for reading and lifelong learning. The librarian collaborates with teachers to integrate information literacy into instruction and ensures students have access to diverse and relevant resources.
Reports To Under the direct supervision of the Principal.
Essential Functions - Library Management: Oversee the daily operations of the school library, including cataloging, circulation, inventory, and maintenance of library resources.
- Maintain the circulation desk operations and circulation of materials and resources
- Maintains the circulation and maintenance of instructional and non-instructional library equipment, including a personal computer if necessary.
- Collection Development: Manage a diverse collection of print and digital materials that align with academic standards and student interests.
- Conduct ongoing weeding of outdated materials and resources
- Instructional Support: Collaborate with teachers to integrate research skills, information literacy, and technology into the curriculum.
- Provide instructional sessions on proper research methods, digital literacy, and responsible technology use.
- Assists students in locating reference and other instructional materials
- Foster an inclusive environment that promotes developing knowledge, skill and abilities to gain independence to fully utilize the library materials and resources.
- Encourage students to read for pleasure and academic success
- Organize reading programs, book clubs, and author visits
- Assists in reinforcement in reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, media and other skills.
- Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning.
- Technology Integration: Remain current on educational technologies
- Support students and staff in utilizing digital resources, databases, and media creation tools
- Research Assistance: Guide students and staff in conducting effective research, evaluating sources, and using citation tools.
- Compliance: Develop and enforce library policies that support ethical use of information and copyright compliance
- Professional Development: Continuous learning of best practices in library science and education through professional development and networking with other librarians.
NOTE: While the basic functions of this position are the same for the various levels of School Librarian,
each successively higher level requires greater responsibility, ability to supervise and run the libraries operations,
ability to lead and train others, a higher degree of education or training, greater computer skills, more related experience,
and/or other attributes that distinguish it from any lower level(s).

Travel Requirements Travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required for certain positions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Strong understanding of library management systems and digital cataloging tools.
- Proficiency in research methodologies, academic databases, and information literacy instruction.
- Knowledge of literature trends, young adult fiction, and culturally diverse reading materials.
- Ability to develop and implement engaging literacy programs that promote reading and critical thinking.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Effective instructional skills for teaching research and digital literacy concepts.
- Ability to manage budgets and allocate resources efficiently.
- Familiarity with copyright laws, intellectual property rights, and ethical information use.
- Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in a dynamic educational setting.
- Ability to use personal computers and instruct students in their use (including creating documents, word processing and using the Internet to conduct research).
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
- Ability to assist students with respect to instructional and non-instructional tasks.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards School-based environment with frequent student and staff interactions
Requires standing, bending, lifting books and materials, and occasional extended work hours for school events.
Qualifications Profile: Qualifications would be equivalent to:
- Valid South Carolina Certification as a School Librarian (or ability to obtain certification)
- Bachelor's or Masters' Degree in Library Science or related field from an accredited program.
- Prior experience working with children is preferred.
- Preferred: experience working in a school library setting
- Strong knowledge of library systems, research databases, and educational technology.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Passion for literacy, education, and fostering student learning.
