Head Custodian
Salary Range: $57,000-$68,000
Reports To: Supervisor of Facilities Contract: 12 months, 2080 hours per year (6:45am-3:15pm, Monday-Friday)
General Function: The Head Custodian is responsible for the planning of work, supervision and control of the custodians in the building in order to meet District standards for cleanliness and assist in meeting the educational goals of the school.
Position is deemed essential personnel.
Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of Act 114, Act 34, Act 151 background clearance and Act 24 Arrest/Conviction Report
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Take full charge of the custodial staff. a. Assign staff according to building needs. b. Keep adequate and proper cleaning equipment on hand in the Custodian’s areas. c. Encourage pride and high standards. i. In the building appearance and operation. ii. In their work. iii. In their personal appearance.
2. Prepare a cleaning schedule that suits the educational program. a. A daily schedule for routine cleaning that will promote the highest standards of appearance, safety, and health. b. A schedule for a thorough summer cleaning program. c. A schedule for custodians to work when extra hours are required for special “use of building”.
3. Take full charge of custodial supplies and equipment in the building. a. Inventory supplies on a regular basis and report supplies needed. b. Keep check on equipment to see that it is working properly. c. Perform minor maintenance tasks as required. d. Report to maintenance any repairs that are necessary. e. Keep storage rooms organized.
4. Mop, scrub, clean, and disinfect classrooms, offices, lavatories, locker rooms, corridors, walls, etc.
5. Wax and polish floors, furniture, and other surfaces.
6. Remove and renew floor surface finishes.
7. Empty wastepaper baskets and dispose of trash.
8. Clean exhibit cases, doors, fixtures, and glass surfaces, including windows, doors, and showcase glass.
9. Maintain school grounds.
10. Remove snow/ice from sidewalks, steps, and parking areas as directed by the Supervisor of
Facilities. Overtime may be necessary to achieve this.
11. Move furniture and equipment.
12. Perform necessary tasks to ensure building security.
13. Perform minor maintenance tasks, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing and carpentry repairs. PM on building/equipment and changing and cleaning filters..
14. Assist in the distribution of supplies and the loading and unloading of supply vehicles.
15. Responsible for basic upkeep of cleaning equipment, i.e. scrubbers, burnishers, wet/dry vacs, floor vacs, etc.
16. Report any safety problem to the Supervisor of Facilities and perform any necessary tasks to ensure safety of occupants in building.
17. Follow proper safety procedures and regulations in the performance of duties, handling of chemicals, supplies, and equipment.
18. Maintain a good work attendance. Notify Supervisor of Facilities when reporting off work and assist in scheduling coverage.
19. Set-up and clean up after all school related activities and outside groups that use the school facilities. Overtime may be needed.
20. Communication must be relayed back and forth with the Supervisor of Facilities either verbally, written, or documented. (Direct face to face, phone call, text, or email)
21. Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Supervisor of Facilities.
22. Approve all rentals for buildings and grounds and assign custodial support as needed.
ADA Specifications: Must be able to communicate verbally. Work is performed primarily in an internal environment. Must be able to stand, crawl, crouch, and bend/twist from a stationary position for substantial periods of time. Able to walk for a sustained period of the workday throughout the school district. Able to hear with 40 decibel loss maximum and see with near acuity of 20 inches or less with normal depth perception, color vision, field of vision, and accommodation. Climb to height of 10 feet or more, balancing on ladder, scaffolding, and catwalks. Ability to tolerate exposure to various physical hazards and atmospheric conditions that may affect respiratory system and/or skin. Able to stoop repetitively and twist the body from a stationary position and reach. Able to push and pull objects weighting up to 50 pounds and use of fingers to pick, feel, reach, and grasp objects. Lift up to 75 pounds with a height up to 30 inches on a repetitive basis. Dollies are available to assist with weights in excess of 75 pounds. May climb 12 feet stepladder occasionally to access high areas to clean, such as when washing windows. Requires use of both hands when operating scrubber/buffer machinery and when making repairs. May perform fine manipulation when making general repairs.
