Job Summary: Substitute Teacher Aide/Assistant provides classroom and instructional suppoprt to students under the general supervision of a Certified Teacher. Minimum Qualifications:- Education equivalent to a graduation from an accredited high school or General Education Diploma (GED).
- Experience working with children
- NYSD Certification as a Level I Teaching Assistant preferred.
Primary Activities - Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper(s), materials and supplies.
- Providing assistance to individual and small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher.
- Assist in overseeing student activities; monitor and maintain student behavior in accordance with established guidelines. Work with individual students or groups of students on special instructional projects.
- Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities, such as copying and filing instructional materials, ordering materials and supplies, and maintaining classroom records.
- Assist teacher in routine classroom preparation duties, such as making student folders, charts, schedules, posters and bulletin boards at the direction or the teacher or administration.
- Supervise and monitor class when teacher is out of the room.
- Perform required care-giving/personal hygiene activities for student; i.e., feeding, toileting, dressing, etc.
- Assist in students moving to other areas of the building such as cafeteria, nurse’s office, restrooms, etc.; assist students during other school related activities as needed including assemblies, field trips and co-curricular activities.
- Assure the safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; assist in maintaining a clean and orderly classroom environment.
- Use positive verbal and non-verbal skills to enhance learning.
- Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
- Maintain confidentiality of all information concerning students, staff, and/or parent/guardian in any public setting.
- Provide the teacher with information about students which will assist the teacher in the development of appropriate learning and behavioral experiences.
- Assist students in the use of available instructional resources, and assist in the development of instructional materials.
- Utilize own special skills and abilities by assisting in instructional programs in such areas as: foreign languages, arts, crafts, music and similar subjects.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the program or building administrator(s) in accordance with school policies and practices.
Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee:- is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit.
- Is regularly required to climb, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and to reach above the head and reach forward.
- Is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and to talk and hear.
- Occasionally required to lift and/or push up to 50 pounds.
- Must have specific vision abilities for close vision, distance vision, depth perception and tell the difference between colors
Work Environment - The noise level in the work environment is typical for a school environment.
- Work generally performed indoors with limited outside supervision of students.
